Joe diGenova leaves Justice Department conspiracy probe after internal disputes

Healfromzero.com – Joe diGenova has resigned from the Justice Department role in which he was directing a broad investigation into alleged wrongdoing by people viewed as political opponents of President Donald Trump. His exit follows mounting friction with senior department officials over the direction and speed of the south Florida-based inquiry.

DiGenova had taken charge of the investigation in April after the removal of Maria Medetis Long, a veteran career prosecutor who had previously led the work. He entered the role promising a rapid path to potential criminal charges, saying progress could come within 30 days. Months later, the investigation remains unfinished and its next steps are uncertain.

“It was an honor and privilege to serve the president and the department,” diGenova said.

He did not discuss the disagreements that preceded his resignation. In a recent dispute, he was told by someone involved in the discussions that he no longer had the confidence of his superiors.

An investigation with expansive aims

The inquiry has been described as a sweeping effort to examine potential crimes tied to government investigations involving Trump. Its scope reaches back to the 2016 inquiry into Russian interference in the presidential election and extends through the federal cases involving the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol and classified documents kept at Mar-a-Lago.

Former CIA Director John Brennan, former FBI Director James Comey and other past government officials have been among those whose actions have faced scrutiny. The breadth of the assignment created pressure to determine which leads could support a viable case and which issues should remain separate.

DiGenova, a longtime Washington lawyer and former US attorney for Washington, DC, had earlier represented Trump in one of the Justice Department matters now connected to the larger inquiry. Upon becoming counselor to the attorney general in April, he oversaw increased witness interviews and, more recently, grand jury testimony.

Those developments raised expectations inside Justice Department headquarters that charges might be filed as early as September. Yet the case has continued to develop rather than moving decisively toward a charging decision.

Debate over focus and pace

At first, prosecutors appeared poised to begin with a narrower matter involving Brennan and allegations of false statements made in congressional testimony. DiGenova then sought to broaden the work toward additional people and issues, changing the shape of the investigation.

“Joe came in pretty hot,” one person familiar with the probe said. “He had a lot of things he wanted to look into.”

That expansion drew criticism from people familiar with the inquiry, who viewed the growing number of investigative paths as a loss of focus. One person characterized the effort as “going down 900 rabbit holes.” Another said diGenova was “missing the forest the trees.”

The dispute was not simply about timing. A criminal investigation with many potential targets can require investigators to sort through different legal theories, witnesses and records while ensuring that evidence supports each possible charge. A broader strategy may uncover new leads, but it can also make it harder to establish a clear sequence of priorities.

For this inquiry, the unresolved tension between a narrow initial case and a more ambitious project appears to have contributed to internal strain at a particularly consequential stage.

Strain within the team

DiGenova worked largely from an office in Fort Pierce, Florida, while directing a team that included career lawyers. The working relationship became contentious, with career attorneys facing angry tirades and at times being pushed aside, one person familiar with the investigation said.

His departure has intensified questions about leadership of the investigation. More than a dozen prosecutors have been assigned to pursue different targets, but the team has produced little publicly visible outcome. The absence of a settled direction has left the inquiry vulnerable to further disruption just as it has begun using the grand jury process.

Frustration at department headquarters also extended to US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones. Since last year, Quiñones had repeatedly indicated that charges would be brought. As the Senate-confirmed chief prosecutor for the district, he was always intended to remain responsible for overseeing the investigation.

The decision to bring in diGenova signaled concern within Justice Department leadership about whether Quiñones could deliver results. In a recent clash with senior officials, Quiñones sought to distance himself from responsibility for the investigation’s problems.

What diGenova’s resignation means

The resignation adds another leadership change to an inquiry already marked by the removal of Medetis Long and by competing views over prosecutorial strategy. It also leaves the Justice Department facing a practical question: whether to narrow the investigation around the most developed allegations or continue pursuing its wider range of targets.

Any future charges would still need to be supported by evidence sufficient to meet the Justice Department’s standards for prosecution. Grand jury activity and witness interviews can indicate active investigative work, but neither guarantees that charges will follow.

For now, the probe remains active but unsettled. Its eventual direction will depend on who exercises day-to-day authority, how prosecutors prioritize the available evidence, and whether the department can resolve the internal divisions exposed by diGenova’s departure.
