The timeline of events has become a focal point of public discussion. According to attorney Tyler Cox, the group arrived at Horn Island shortly before 11 o’clock in the morning. The final time Warren Hudson spotted Wells was approximately 3 p.m., when the two shared a lighthearted moment. Cox described the scene: Nolan was holding a girl he had met on the island, and Warren, one of his closest friends, offered a knowing chuckle, wishing him well.

“You know him being one of Nolan’s best friends, Warren kind of gave him kind of a chuckle, like, ‘Oh, I see you with this girl.’ You know, ‘Hope everything goes well for you.'”

However, complications arose roughly an hour later. The friends began experiencing difficulties with the bilge pump on their vessel, the Triton. Water accumulated rapidly within the hull, nearly submerging the battery. Cox noted that his clients grew anxious and urged their companions to depart immediately. The group left the island at 4:30 p.m., but the circumstances surrounding Wells’ subsequent fate remain unclear.

Questions About What Happened Next

Cox emphasized that the group was not alone on Horn Island that day. He estimated that hundreds of boats and thousands of visitors populated the barrier island. The possibility that Wells was abandoned on a remote shore without means of communication has fueled conspiracy theories, but the attorney disputed this narrative.

“That’s just how it is here. You can always find another ride off the island, and again, there were 2,000 other people there, so he wasn’t left alone by any means.”

Another point of contention involves Wells’ mobile phone, which was reportedly on the boat when the group departed. Cox explained that it is standard practice to anchor approximately 50 feet offshore and swim to the island, a process that exposes electronics to salt water. He noted that five other passengers’ phones were also aboard, and everyone retrieved their devices upon returning. Wells’ phone, however, was not collected.

“I don’t know anything more corrosive to a cell phone than salt water,” he said. “When they left, not only was Nolan’s phone on the boat, so was five other people’s … and everyone collected the phones after” they got back. Everyone, of course, except for Nolan.

A family friend subsequently located the device at one of the friends’ residences. Elmore Wonsley, Wells’ father, confirmed that he visited the location later that evening to retrieve his son’s car and keys.

Audio Controversy and Legal Action

Edward Paltzik, a defamation attorney representing the three men, has criticized the public reaction to edited audio from an emergency tow call made that day. He described the circulating versions of the recording as distractions from the essential facts.

“The Sea Tow call — and the hundreds of versions of it now circulating — is a red herring. It’s distracting people from what matters,” Paltzik said.

A viral video featuring what purportedly is cleaned-up audio from the Triton’s call has intensified public scrutiny. The video’s creator claimed to have removed background noise and uncovered statements that could implicate the friends. CNN reviewed the same audio file and determined it to be inconclusive.

“We’re winnowing it down to the worst of the worst – the worst of the worst offenders who have said the worst things, who have the largest platforms, who have caused the most damage,” Paltzik said. “It’s going to be a lengthy process.”

A Community in Mourning and Conflict

The attorneys have expressed frustration that their clients cannot properly mourn. Cox told CNN that the young men have been unable to grieve the loss of someone they have known since middle school.

“The biggest tragedy of this entire thing is that Nolan unfortunately lost his life and nobody knows definitively what happened,” their attorney, Tyler Cox, said, adding all three of his clients have been questioned by authorities in the case. “These guys haven’t been able to mourn the loss of their friend and brother Nolan Wells,” Cox told CNN Wednesday. “They left the island at 4:30 pm … So, we don’t know what happened to Nolan after 4:30,” he said. “We want to know just as much as anybody.”

As the case receives national attention, the legal team plans to pursue defamation claims against those they believe have misrepresented their clients. Paltzik indicated that the process will be extensive, targeting individuals with significant influence who have made the most damaging statements.
