Healfromzero.com – Ed Sheeran opened his Philadelphia concert Saturday with an emotional statement about the Israel-Hamas war, the removal of Macklemore from his remaining US tour dates, and the tension that has followed the decision.

Before playing music at Lincoln Financial Field, the English singer told the crowd that the conflict had left him deeply distressed and forced him into choices he did not take lightly. He apologized to fans while acknowledging the debate over Macklemore’s outspoken pro-Palestinian comments during earlier tour stops.

“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician, but this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet,” Sheeran said.

The Philadelphia date arrived after a turbulent week for the tour. Macklemore was removed from the remaining US shows, and Sheeran’s other opening performers stepped away. Sheeran had previously addressed the situation in an Instagram post, but Saturday marked a more extensive public response from the stage.

“This week, the criticism was about something much more important and I’ve had to take and make difficult decisions and I am making mistakes, and I’m so, so sorry,” he said.

A Message About Israel, Gaza and the West Bank

Sheeran spoke directly about the October 7, 2023 attack led by Hamas against Israel, including the attack at the Nova Music festival. He described it as horrific and said it intensified generations of Jewish trauma. Hamas militants killed about 1,200 people and took more than 250 hostages in the attack.

He then turned to the war that Israel launched in Gaza afterward, calling the scale of continuing violence catastrophic, unjustifiable and disproportionate. Sheeran also said the treatment of Palestinians in the West Bank involved systemic injustice that could not be ignored.

“My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian’s lives, children’s lives,” he said.

His remarks placed the concert in the context of a larger argument that has reached stages, sports venues, campuses and cultural institutions. Artists can face pressure from audiences with sharply different views, particularly when public statements are seen as either too political or not political enough. Sheeran framed his position as one rooted in grief for civilians and concern about the human cost of the conflict.

He also sought to reassure the audience that his concerts remain open to people who disagree with each other politically. Sheeran said people could stand together at a show despite holding opposing views, united at least by the experience of hearing the songs.

“My concerts have always been a safe space for everyone, and that matters hugely to me,” he said.

Fans Arrive as Demonstrators Gather Nearby

Thousands of fans entered Lincoln Financial Field shortly before the performance. Many wore pink, and families with young children were among those arriving for the stadium event. Several people said they were looking forward to the music and hoped the evening would proceed without disruption.

Some attendees expressed sympathy with Macklemore’s statements while still wanting the focus to remain on Sheeran’s performance. Lucinda Balubinsai said she was eager to see her favorite performer, calling him “my ginger Ed Sheeran.” She said she was disappointed that Macklemore would not appear but felt Sheeran could still carry the concert on his own.

Not every ticket holder felt certain about attending. Karen DeAngelis, who traveled from Virginia with her 10-year-old daughter for the weekend, said Sheeran’s response to Macklemore’s removal had caused her to reconsider whether they would go inside for the show.

A small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators assembled several blocks from the stadium before the concert. The protest was peaceful, with Palestinian flags, signs, drums and trumpets. Roughly 50 participants chanted “Free Palestine” and called on Sheeran to leave Philadelphia. A coalition of pro-Palestinian groups had announced plans for a nearby demonstration, saying it wanted to bring attention back to Palestine and local action.

Macklemore’s Earlier Remarks

Macklemore, whose 2012 hit “Thrift Shop” made him an international star, has publicly advocated for Palestinian rights during the war in Gaza. Earlier in September, while opening for Sheeran at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, he wore a black-and-white keffiyeh around his neck and used his stage time to speak about Palestine.

“A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place, was so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: Free Palestine,” he said.

He also addressed Jewish listeners directly, arguing that criticism of Israel should not be interpreted as criticism of Jewish people.

“To all of my Jewish brothers and sisters, criticism of Israel, criticism of apartheid, being against genocide in no way is a criticism of you,” Macklemore said.

On Monday, Macklemore said in an Instagram post that he had been dropped from Sheeran’s remaining American dates. He placed responsibility on Robert Kraft, the owner of Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, where the two artists had been scheduled to perform.

For Sheeran, the Philadelphia appearance became more than a tour stop. It was an attempt to address a rapidly escalating dispute while maintaining the inclusive atmosphere he says he wants for his concerts. His message acknowledged the pain surrounding the war without resolving the disagreement that has divided artists, fans and activists across the tour.
