Nima Sherpa was named as the fifth casualty in an Instagram announcement from the Nimsdai Foundation on Sunday.
“No words can ease the pain of this unimaginable loss,” the foundation’s message stated. While no nationality was specified for Sherpa, the name typically indicates Nepali heritage.
Challenging Conditions and Timely Rescue
The Karakoram range, situated at the western edge of the Himalayas, is renowned for its volatile weather patterns. The area contains four mountains surpassing 26,000 feet, including K2, which stands as the world’s second-highest peak at 28,251 feet and sits adjacent to Broad Peak.
Tehsin Razi, a mountain photographer, highlighted that the ideal summiting period runs from July 15 through 30. Current timing places the expedition outside this optimal window, increasing the danger level. Razi personally experienced an avalanche while climbing Broad Peak the previous July.
“It was very scary. I was sitting at base camp and suddenly there was a huge blast and tons of snow powder came crashing down,” Razi recalled. “I hid behind a huge rock and sat crouched in a ball with my hands over my head, to protect my head and any bones from falling objects.”
Khan believes the safest method to retrieve the remaining climbers involves a “long line” technique, where a rope is lowered from a helicopter without requiring the aircraft to land. Emergency workers expressed concerns to CNN on Saturday about the possibility of additional avalanches disrupting the recovery mission.
A Legacy of Achievement
Purja, a former British army soldier, significantly elevated the global profile of mountaineering through his record-breaking endurance feats. In 2019, he accomplished what NASA termed the Eight Thousanders challenge, ascending all fourteen peaks above 8,000 meters in slightly more than six months.
“My heart is not accepting all of this loss,” Purja’s foundation shared through a statement. “We are using drones and helicopters to access the mountain. We are doing our best, and we also don’t want to lose more lives in the process.”
The Nimsdai Foundation, established by Purja in 2022, published a tribute on Instagram honoring his impact.
“His legacy will live on in the countless lives he changed and the people he inspired to climb their own mountains,” the post read.
Local volunteers have contributed food supplies to the base camp, which sits at the avalanche’s endpoint. Khan expressed gratitude for the community’s generosity during this difficult time.
“I’m very happy to be surrounded by such kind and generous people from Pakistan,” he said.
