White House Denies Access to CNN, MS NOW and Politico Journalists After Trump Announces Ban

Healfromzero.com – Several journalists were stopped from entering the White House on Saturday morning after President Donald Trump declared that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were barred from the premises, a move First Amendment advocates describe as unconstitutional.

CNN reporter Betsy Klein said her White House press credential was taken after she arrived for work. A Politico reporter, along with an MS NOW reporter and photographer, also could not enter the White House grounds. The three organizations have indicated they expect to pursue legal measures to protect their journalists’ access.

Credentials Disabled at White House Gates

Klein said a Secret Service agent informed her that her pass was no longer active, but did not offer a reason for the decision. She described the exchange during a Saturday morning appearance with CNN’s Kasie Hunt.

“I asked him if he could provide an explanation as to why it had been deactivated,” Klein recounted. “He said he had no further information. I asked him once more if he had any more details he could share with me, and he said that I should be referred to the White House Press Office.”

MS NOW correspondent Akayla Gardner described a similar experience outside the White House perimeter. An officer asked her to surrender her badge and told her it had been disabled. When she asked why she could not get inside, Gardner said the officer responded that the matter was beyond his authority.

Gardner said an MS NOW photographer was turned away as well. However, an MS NOW producer was able to enter after her own credential scanned successfully, showing that access was not blocked uniformly for every employee of the network.

Trump’s Announcement Takes Effect

Trump announced Friday afternoon that CNN, MS NOW and Politico were banned “effective immediately.” He paired the declaration with criticism of what he calls “fake” news, a phrase he has frequently used to reject coverage he views as hostile or unfavorable.

The announcement surprised some White House personnel. Journalists from all three organizations continued working on the campus through Friday evening, but uncertainty grew as they departed over whether their credentials would function the following day. Saturday’s denials of entry provided the first clear indication that the president’s statement was being put into practice.

White House press credentials matter because reporters working there cover the president, administration officials, policy announcements and fast-moving national events. Scores of journalists regularly work from the White House campus. Restricting access for particular outlets can make it harder for those newsrooms to question officials directly, attend briefings and report from the scene.

News Organizations Pledge a Response

CNN said it would continue covering the federal government despite any effort to limit physical access to the White House or other public buildings.

“Early today, CNN journalists were denied access to the White House grounds. CNN’s mission to report on the U.S. government will continue regardless of any attempts to restrict physical access to the White House and other government buildings, or any other attempts to impede our journalism,” the network said.

“We have a right under the U.S. Constitution to do our reporting without hindrance or interference from the government and this ban is an illegal assault on this fundamental right.”

MS NOW said it would take all necessary action to defend press freedoms and its role in covering the administration.

“[MS NOW] intends to take any and all steps necessary to defend our First Amendment rights and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy. We stand firmly behind our anchors, our reporters, and our newsroom. We will continue to report on the President, the administration, and the issues that impact the American people.”

First Amendment Concerns

Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said Friday that a White House exclusion based on an outlet’s coverage would violate constitutional principles. The central concern is viewpoint discrimination: government officials cannot selectively punish journalists because they dislike the perspective or substance of their reporting while continuing to admit other members of the press.

“The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can’t ban others because it doesn’t like their reporting,” Brown said. “This is textbook viewpoint discrimination and will be quickly struck down by the courts if challenged.”

Clayton Weimers, executive director of Reporters Without Borders North America, also criticized the effort to decide which news organizations may cover the president from the White House.

“The president is once again spewing lies about ‘fake news’ to try to control who covers him and where,” Weimers said.

“Press access is not a privilege for journalists,” Weimers said. “It’s a right to ensure the American people can be independently informed.”

A Broader Fight Over Press Access

The confrontation follows a week of difficult political headlines for Trump as the midterm elections draw nearer. He faces increasing pressure over the deeply unpopular war in Iran, higher gas prices and persistent worries about household costs.

Attacking news organizations has been a central feature of Trump’s political messaging for roughly a decade and remains a reliable source of applause at MAGA rallies. During his second term, however, criticism of the press has increasingly been accompanied by concrete attempts to narrow media access, despite White House claims that the administration is the most transparent in U.S. history.

The dispute now raises a practical question beyond the affected organizations: whether a president may use White House access as leverage against critical coverage. Legal challenges are likely to focus on that question, while the journalists involved continue seeking to cover the administration and the policies affecting the public.
