Platner’s Campaign Navigates Potential Exit from Key Maine Senate Contest

Platner s campaign trying to navigate – According to sources familiar with the situation, Maine’s Democratic Senate nominee Graham Platner is preparing to address his campaign team via conference call on Wednesday evening. This scheduled conversation represents the culmination of an entire day filled with discussions that are anticipated to lead toward his formal withdrawal from the highly consequential Senate race in Maine.

For approximately 48 hours, Democrats across the state have been awaiting Platner’s decision regarding his candidacy. This period followed an accusation from a woman who alleged that Platner raped her in 2021—an allegation the nominee has consistently denied. Meanwhile, a compact group of strategists working behind the scenes on his campaign has been actively attempting to orchestrate an orderly departure from the race without completely undermining the grassroots movement that Platner cultivated throughout his campaign against Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Campaign Messaging and Supporter Engagement

Ben Chin, who serves as the campaign manager for Platner, communicated directly with supporters on Wednesday through a written message. In this communication, Chin emphasized the broader vision of the campaign beyond its central figure.

“We’ve said from the very beginning that this campaign was never about Graham but about a movement of working people united to take back power,” Chin stated in his message to supporters.

Platner is anticipated to make his official announcement through a pre-recorded video, which may be released later on Wednesday. Although he did not participate in an early-afternoon call with campaign personnel, aides on that call indicated that supporters should anticipate hearing from Platner during Wednesday evening hours.

Allegations and Campaign Response

Support for Maine’s Democratic Senate nominee experienced a significant decline throughout this week. The downturn followed allegations from a woman whom Platner had previously dated, claiming that he raped her in 2021. Platner has maintained that these accusations are false.

After both CNN and Politico published reports concerning the allegation, Platner characterized the situation as “troubling, serious and false.” Following these media reports, the nominee publicly stated that he would “reflect on the best path forward” for his Senate bid.

In his message to supporters, the Platner campaign requested input regarding subsequent actions that the Maine Democratic Party should undertake to identify a new Senate nominee. This communication highlighted growing tensions and divisions between the Platner campaign and state party leadership.

“We firmly believe that the supporters and volunteers who built this movement deserve to have a real role in any nomination process,” Chin wrote in his statement.

“If the Maine Democratic Party hopes to harness our movement, and avoid disillusioning the hundreds of thousands of supporters who came into the fray because of our movement’s policies, it must consult the feedback and proposals of the people who built and sustained this,” he continued.

Party Leadership and Strategic Considerations

Following Chin’s text message, Devon Murphy-Anderson, who serves as executive director of Maine’s Democratic Party, publicly addressed some of the Platner campaign’s recent actions while simultaneously appealing to his supporters.

“While we may be frustrated with Graham Platner’s continued efforts to manipulate this process, we are so thankful for his supporters and all of their efforts to defeat Susan Collins — they are a vital part of our Party and deserve to participate in an open process to select Platner’s replacement,” Murphy-Anderson wrote on social media.

Morris Katz, a prominent campaign strategist for Platner, traveled to Maine on Wednesday to meet with the embattled candidate. According to a participant, Katz also did not address members of the campaign staff during a brief afternoon call. Katz, who additionally serves as a key adviser to New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has informed associates that he does not believe Platner can remain in the race given the allegations against him.

“This could – and should – end today,” a person close to the campaign told CNN. “We’ll see if it does.”

Timeline and Next Steps

A significant question surrounding the Maine political situation involves whether Platner and his progressive supporters will maintain any influence in selecting the next Democratic nominee, should he depart the race before the July 13 deadline. Under Maine state law, the party retains until July 27 to name a replacement candidate.

The Maine Democratic Party explicitly stated on Tuesday night that the Platner campaign should “have no role in determining our next Democratic nominee for the US Senate, nor in determining what this process looks like.”

On Wednesday, the party approved a comprehensive plan to conduct a nominating convention for selecting a new nominee if Platner withdraws from the race.

“Today, the Maine Democratic Party held a meeting with over 100 state committee members who voted to hold a nominating convention to choose a new nominee if there is a vacancy to fill,” Charlie Dingman, chair of the Maine Democratic Party, and two other party leaders wrote Wednesday.

Dingman and the party leadership further indicated that they would soon announce the complete timeline, details regarding how the nomination process will advance, information about participation opportunities, and requirements for potential candidates. They committed to keeping the public informed throughout the entire process, emphasizing that transparency remains of the utmost importance.
