Reid Hoffman says E. Jean Carroll probe involving his nonprofit is meant to ‘silence’ Trump critics

Reid Hoffman Claims E Jean Carroll Probe Aims to Silence Trump Critics

Reid Hoffman says E Jean Carroll – Democratic billionaire Reid Hoffman has accused the Justice Department of launching a criminal investigation into E. Jean Carroll’s legal battles as a calculated move to “silence” critics of President Donald Trump. In a recent post on X, he argued that the probe targets his nonprofit, the American Future Republic, to suppress dissent against Trump. The investigation centers on Carroll’s lawsuits, which resulted in a jury ruling against Trump for sexual assault and were later upheld by an appeals court. Hoffman claims the probe is part of a broader effort to weaken opponents of the president.

“Trump believes this fabricated investigation will do three things: silence women, consolidate his power, and hinder my ability to support legal efforts against his administration,” Hoffman wrote. “He thinks fear is contagious and courage is not. He is wrong.”

Federal prosecutors are examining whether E. Jean Carroll provided false testimony in her two civil lawsuits against Trump, alleging sexual assault and defamation. The investigation also scrutinizes the nonprofit American Future Republic, which Hoffman established and funded, for its role in covering some of her legal expenses. Sources confirmed that the probe, still in its early stages, now includes both Carroll’s statements and the organization’s financial contributions. This focus on Carroll, a 82-year-old former magazine columnist, highlights Trump’s consistent targeting of individuals who challenge his record.

Trump’s Strategy of Legal Pressure

Reid Hoffman’s claims point to a wider pattern of legal pressure Trump has used against critics. The president has repeatedly labeled Carroll a “liar” and a “wack job,” despite her success in court. In November 2024, Trump directed the Justice Department to investigate prominent Democrats tied to Jeffrey Epstein, a sex offender whose case was under review at the time. Hoffman was explicitly mentioned in that directive, though he dismissed it as “baseless.” This strategy of linking critics to Epstein’s network has been a recurring tactic in Trump’s campaign to delegitimize opponents.

Carroll’s lawsuits began in 2019, alleging that Trump sexually assaulted her during a 1990s encounter. The case gained national attention in 2022 after a second lawsuit was filed, with the final ruling in 2023. Roberta Kaplan, a lawyer known for representing plaintiffs in a 2017 Charlottesville lawsuit, became Carroll’s legal representative. Her deposition in 2023 revealed the American Future Republic’s financial backing, linking Hoffman’s organization directly to Carroll’s legal fight against Trump.

Hoffman’s Support for Legal Accountability

Hoffman’s nonprofit has supported numerous legal actions targeting Trump’s policies and actions. Beyond Carroll’s case, the American Future Republic has funded initiatives aimed at holding the administration accountable, including training citizens to use Freedom of Information Act requests. He has described these efforts as essential for transparency, stating they help challenge Trump’s “scorched-earth” legal methods. Despite his criticisms of Trump, Hoffman has remained a key fundraiser for Democratic causes, including Biden’s re-election campaign and Kamala Harris’ presidential bid.

The connection between Reid Hoffman and E. Jean Carroll has intensified as the Justice Department’s probe continues. Hoffman asserts that the investigation is not about his nonprofit’s actions but about using legal threats to intimidate critics. This aligns with his broader view of the probe as a tool to weaken opposition. Meanwhile, the case against Carroll underscores the long-standing tension between Trump and individuals who accuse him of misconduct, particularly in the realm of sexual assault. As the investigation progresses, its implications for political dissent and legal accountability will remain a focal point of public debate.
