UK Airports Brace for Continued Chaos After Air Traffic Control Collapse

Healfromzero.com – British airports faced another day of severe disruption on Wednesday as the aftermath of a multi-hour air traffic control failure continued to ripple through Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester and other major hubs. Departure boards across London’s three principal airports displayed dozens of flights marked as delayed or cancelled, while the aircraft-tracking platform Flightradar24 tallied roughly 1,300 cancellations to and from UK airports on Tuesday alone. By Wednesday, the tracker reported that 177 additional flights had been scrapped, almost all of them at London-Heathrow.

The episode marks the second major systems failure in two years to plunge passengers at Heathrow into disarray. The airport, ranked as the world’s seventh-busiest by passenger volume in 2025 according to Airports Council International data, handled more than 84 million travellers last year. A failure of this scale therefore touches hundreds of thousands of people within hours.

NATS Says the Fault Is Fixed — But the Backlog Remains

NATS, the United Kingdom’s principal provider of air traffic control services, confirmed on Tuesday that the underlying technical problem had been resolved. Yet the company acknowledged that clearing the resulting backlog of queued flights would take considerable time. Departures at Heathrow had resumed by the time of reporting, but arrivals continued to be cancelled, the airport said in a statement.

“Disruption is expected to continue,” the airport added.

NATS issued its own statement apologising for the extended downtime.

“The recovery from the issue has taken longer than we had hoped,” the organisation said. “We know this is hugely frustrating and apologise unreservedly.”

The company said it was now operating normally and working through the accumulated queue of flights.
