What we know so far about – A significant discrepancy has surfaced between the official narrative provided by federal immigration authorities and the firsthand accounts of three men who were present during the fatal shooting of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston. According to Hugo Balderas-Ibarra, an attorney who interviewed the detained individuals, the version of events presented by Immigration and Customs Enforcement does not align with what actually transpired that Tuesday morning.
The Official ICE Statement
Federal officials have maintained that an ICE agent discharged his weapon after Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican citizen, struck a law enforcement vehicle with his van and failed to comply with verbal instructions. The incident occurred during what the agency characterized as a “targeted operation” involving a traffic stop. However, this account has been directly challenged by those who witnessed the confrontation.
Alternative Version from Detained Witnesses
Three men who were detained during the operation have provided a substantially different account to their attorney. Balderas-Ibarra stated in a video shared on Instagram that none of the individuals used the van to collide with ICE agents, and that the agents’ lives were never threatened at any point during the encounter. The attorney emphasized that the agent who fired the fatal shot did so almost immediately after exiting his vehicle, contradicting the official timeline.
At no point did they use the van to ram into the ICE agents and at no point were these ICE agents’ lives ever in any danger.
Salgado Araujo Was Not the Target
Perhaps most significantly, a source with knowledge of preliminary investigation details revealed to CNN that Salgado Araujo was not the intended subject of the operation. Texas authorities had previously informed ICE about two individuals—neither of whom was Salgado Araujo—who were believed to be in the United States without proper documentation and were traveling in a white van. When officers were approaching the target’s address on Tuesday, they noticed a white van with someone who resembled the person they were seeking, prompting them to initiate the vehicle stop.
The van was indeed registered to Salgado Araujo, and agents subsequently determined that he was in the country illegally. Despite this, the family maintains that the hardworking father of three would have complied with instructions had he realized the vehicle following him belonged to federal immigration authorities.
Video Evidence and Public Outcry
Video footage that has circulated widely online shows a black SUV pursuing the white van, followed by scenes of a man lying on the ground while a federal agent kneels beside him. Juliet Martinez, a Houston resident who captured the footage, described the wounded man as screaming for help and repeatedly stating that he had been shot. She noted that the right side of his stomach was bleeding as he lay face down near a barbershop, moaning in pain.

Ongoing Investigations
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet released any footage of the shooting, and a spokesperson confirmed that none of the involved agents had been issued body-worn cameras. Multiple investigations are currently underway, including inquiries by the FBI, the DHS Office of the Inspector General, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. Salgado Araujo’s family and community members are calling for a more thorough and independent examination of the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences determined that Salgado Araujo died from a gunshot wound to the torso, classifying the manner of death as homicide. As questions continue to mount about how the situation escalated, calls for transparency and accountability grow louder in Houston and beyond.
