NYPD evaluating possible hate crime after 2 men were stabbed in unprovoked attack, officials say

Police Probe Hate Crime Motive Following Double Stabbing on Manhattan’s Upper West Side

The attacks took place in broad daylight on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where two men were assaulted in what witnesses described as an unprovoked manner. According to police, the suspect, who has been identified as 51-year-old Raul Morales, is now in custody while investigators work to determine his possible motive.

Victims and Attack Details

One of the victims is an Asian man, while the other is a Jewish man, as confirmed by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Both individuals, aged 57 and 50 respectively, sustained multiple stab wounds across their bodies during the separate but related incidents. The first victim was discovered conscious and alert with a wound to his back after police received a 911 call just after 1:30 p.m. The second victim was found with a stab wound to his chest. Both men were subsequently transported to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital, where they remain in stable condition and are expected to survive.

Commissioner Tisch noted that at this time, there is no known connection between Morales and either of the victims, nor is there a link between the two victims themselves. The initial investigation also suggests that mental health issues may have played a role in the stabbings. Witness statements and victim accounts indicate that the attacker shouted “Allahu Akbar” during both assaults.

Witness Accounts and Community Response

Marianna Ellenberg, who witnessed one of the attacks, described the scene as surreal. She recalled seeing a man kneeling on the street with a knife protruding from his back, comparing the image to something from a film. “I’ve been robbed myself, but to actually see just the knife sticking out, it’s just like that kind of cruel violence at 2 p.m. in the afternoon in bright sunlight,” she explained. “It just kind of reminds you this idea of your safety zone, like nothing is safe.”

“At this time there is no known link between Morales and either of the victims, nor between the victims and each other,” Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Volunteers from Shomrim, a Jewish civilian neighborhood watch organization, responded to a call on their hotline and arrived at the scene following one of the stabbings. Michael Jacobs, a Shomrim volunteer, told CNN that the victim they encountered was wearing a yarmulke, the traditional skullcap worn by many Jewish men. He was either heading to or returning from synagogue at the time of the attack. “He’s a respected person in the neighborhood, minding his own business, just going to pray,” Jacobs said. He also noted that the assault occurred on Tisha B’Av, a significant Jewish day of mourning and fasting.

Official Reactions and Investigation Progress

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the incidents in a post on X, confirming he had been briefed on the “horrifying stabbings.” He praised the ongoing police investigation into the motive behind the attacks. “These hateful and despicable attacks have no place in our city,” Mamdani wrote, expressing relief that both victims were in stable condition. Jacobs credited the rapid police response for enabling officers to apprehend the suspect quickly. “The police response was very, very quick, which was massively helpful in order to be able to catch him,” he said.

The two stabbings occurred in close proximity to one another.
