A Crash with a Sheriff’s Deputy While Running Errands Before Their Wedding Changed Everything for This Couple

A crash with a sheriff s deputy – Just weeks before their wedding, the lives of a young couple were irrevocably altered by a tragic accident involving a California sheriff’s deputy. According to a lawsuit filed by the victims’ families, the collision occurred during a routine errand, when the deputy sped through a red light and struck their car. The incident, which happened in September in Beaumont, left 21-year-old Gavin Hinkley dead and his fiancée, 20-year-old Madeline Fox, severely injured. Nine months later, the deputy, Glynn Wilburn, has been formally charged with gross vehicular manslaughter and felony reckless driving causing serious injury.

Charges and the Investigation’s Findings

The charges against Wilburn were announced by the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office on Thursday. Prosecutors argue that the deputy’s actions were the direct cause of Hinkley’s death and Fox’s life-altering injuries. According to the DA’s statement, investigators discovered that Wilburn was responding to a shots-fired call, yet dispatchers had previously confirmed that deputies were already on scene, the suspect vehicle had departed, and no injuries were reported at the time.

“Wilburn was responding with lights and sirens from Beaumont to reports of shots fired in Calimesa,” the district attorney’s office said. “While traveling on Cherry Valley Boulevard at speeds of approximately 100 mph, Wilburn entered an intersection and collided with a civilian vehicle at approximately 71 mph.”

Analysis of data from Wilburn’s patrol vehicle revealed his attempts to mitigate the collision. In the moments before impact, he turned the steering wheel right, removed his foot from the accelerator, and applied the brakes, reducing his speed from around 98 mph to 76 mph. Despite these actions, the crash was deemed preventable, with the California Highway Patrol (CHP) concluding that Wilburn’s failure to stop at the red light was the proximate cause of the tragedy.

Wilburn, 42, is currently on administrative leave from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, as confirmed by the department to CNN. A warrant for his arrest was issued on Friday, following the DA’s filing of a felony complaint. The document states that Wilburn’s gross negligence resulted in Hinkley’s death and Fox’s severe injuries, which included brain trauma and potential permanent paralysis.

The Victims’ Heartwarming Story

Madeline Fox and Gavin Hinkley’s relationship began in 2022, when they first met and quickly developed a deep bond. Their families described their connection as “effortless” and a source of joy, highlighting the couple’s shared adventures and unwavering support for one another. Fox’s 18th birthday marked a pivotal moment in their relationship, as Hinkley surprised her with a dozen roses and proposed.

“From that moment on, they were rarely apart, spending their days riding horses and dirt bikes, off-roading, taking trips to the beach and river, and making cherished memories with family and friends,” the families wrote in a statement to CNN.

Their love story, as shared by loved ones, was one of passion and togetherness. Hinkley and Fox were described as adventurous, loyal, and full of life, often embarking on spontaneous journeys and helping each other navigate life’s challenges. “They brought out the very best in each other, always encouraging one another to dream bigger and live more boldly,” the families added. The couple’s upcoming wedding was a testament to their commitment, with plans to celebrate their love in a few short weeks.

The CHP’s report on the incident provides a detailed account of the crash. It notes that Wilburn, who was not wearing a seat belt, was driving a Ford when he broadsided the couple’s Tesla. The report also highlights Wilburn’s injuries, including abrasions to his head, neck swelling, and pain in his left arm and knee. Despite his own injuries, the deputy’s actions were criticized for the severity of the damage inflicted on the civilians.

Legal Proceedings and the Deputy’s Actions

The legal case against Wilburn is centered on his alleged negligence during the collision. Prosecutors argue that he should have known the scene was clear, given the dispatchers’ confirmation. However, the deputy reportedly chose to proceed with urgency, using his emergency lights and siren to signal his presence on the road.

According to the CHP’s analysis, Wilburn’s decision to enter the intersection at high speed without checking for traffic contributed to the accident. The report states that his failure to stop at the red light, combined with the excessive speed, created a dangerous situation that led to the collision. The victims’ families have expressed frustration over the charges, emphasizing the life they lost and the suffering endured.

“The negligence of Deputy Wilburn was the proximate cause of the death of Driver Hinkley and the injuries to Passenger Fox and himself,” the CHP report concluded.

Wilburn’s attorney has yet to respond to CNN’s inquiries, and the deputy himself has not provided comment. The lawsuit alleges that Wilburn’s actions were not only reckless but also a betrayal of the trust placed in law enforcement. For Hinkley and Fox, the incident was more than a car crash—it was the sudden end to a future filled with promise.

As the legal process unfolds, the community mourns the loss of a young couple whose love was a beacon of hope and joy. Their story, now intertwined with the tragedy, serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the impact of a single moment of carelessness. The families continue to seek justice, hoping that the charges will reflect the gravity of the loss and the irreversible changes the crash has caused.

With the trial likely to be a focal point in the coming months, the case has sparked discussions about police accountability and the importance of vigilance behind the wheel. For Hinkley and Fox, the event that shattered their lives has become a symbol of a love story that was cut short, leaving their families and friends to carry the memory of their shared happiness forward.
