His Team Crashed Out of the World Cup, But Love Was Waiting in the Stands
His team crashed out of the World Cup in dramatic fashion, yet Oliver Craxton never expected that heartbreak to lead him to his soulmate. On June 22, 1986, the young Londoner stood among thousands of supporters inside the magnificent Azteca Stadium. While his team crashed out of the tournament, Oliver’s romantic journey was only beginning. Among the Spanish-speaking fans in the crowd, he noticed three women, one of whom would become Sofia Larrinua, the love of his life.
The Legendary Azteca Stadium
The Azteca remains one of football’s most celebrated venues. Perched at 2,241 meters above sea level, its distinctive bowl architecture envelops spectators in an electric atmosphere. That memorable June afternoon, the stadium witnessed a pivotal quarterfinal between England and Argentina. The contest entered football folklore, largely because of Diego Maradona’s controversial “Hand of God” goal. For Oliver, however, the result mattered less than the unexpected connection he made off the pitch.
“To be there in the Azteca during the ‘Hand of God’ match, although England lost, they lost but we met each other,” says Oliver.
A Pub Regular’s Bold Decision
Living in North London, Oliver worked for the local council and enjoyed evenings at the pub with lifelong friends. “We’ve known each other since we’re about four years old, and we used to go out drinking regularly,” he shares. Love had remained elusive. “I hadn’t had much luck with girlfriends before … I’d sort of gone out with one or two girls for just a drink in the pub kind of thing, and that was it. I didn’t have a steady girlfriend.”
During the summer of 1985, Oliver and his companions gathered in an Islington pub to discuss England’s chances at the upcoming tournament. The Three Lions had won in 1966, but repeating that success seemed unlikely. Nevertheless, Oliver and his friend Andy chose to take the plunge. “We were sitting in a pub and we were saying, ‘Let’s go. We should go,'” Oliver recalls. They raised their glasses and committed to the adventure.
“We both made a commitment to it,” Oliver remembers. “We both agreed that it would be a holiday of a lifetime, and, of course, that’s what it turned out to be.”
Navigating Unexpected Challenges
Organizing the journey presented difficulties. Oliver and Andy lacked the funds for extended time off, so they placed a bet that England would progress beyond the group stage. Their wager succeeded. Trouble arrived when Oliver discovered his travel agency had gone bankrupt. “We managed to get another package, but it was more expensive, so I had to sell my car. I had a nice car which I had bought to try and attract girls, but I sold the car to pay for the extra increase.”
Despite these financial hurdles, the duo reached Mexico City full of anticipation. In the days leading up to the quarterfinal, Oliver observed the welcoming environment. “Everybody was really friendly, and people were saying hello, and there was a real mix of people at the games — families, lots of women on their own or in groups,” he reflects. “I did think that there was a chance of meeting somebody, but obviously it was probably sort of wishful thinking.”
A Match That Transformed His Life
Oliver and Andy arrived at the Azteca ahead of schedule, abandoning their reserved seats to mingle with fellow England fans. As the stands filled, Oliver caught sight of three young women making their way into the crowd. They spoke Spanish yet radiated the same enthusiasm as everyone else. That serendipitous meeting would alter Oliver’s destiny forever. His team crashed out of the World Cup, but in the stands of one of football’s most iconic arenas, he found something far more valuable than victory.
