Disappointments for Rivals
The victory brought further heartbreak for Cameron Young, who continues searching for his first major title despite winning The Players Championship earlier this season. Young had previously finished one stroke behind at the 2022 Open Championship at St. Andrews and held the lead heading into the final round at the Masters in April.
Sam Burns also experienced disappointment, having entered the final round with a two-shot advantage but failing to birdie any of his last 12 holes. The Louisiana State University graduate finished runner-up once again.
“(Fox) is a well-earned champion and hats off to him,” Burns said. “He did what he needed to do down the stretch and ultimately just came up a couple short today.”
Defending champion Scottie Scheffler maintained his position within striking distance throughout the day, carding a 3-under 67 to share fourth place with Tommy Fleetwood. Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau finished tied for 14th, and Rory McIlroy, who had been vocal in his criticism of the LIV Golf player throughout the tournament, ended tied for 40th.
A Journey Through Adversity
Fox’s path to major championship glory was far from straightforward, marked by numerous challenges and setbacks. Speaking with CNN’s Don Riddell before the Desert Classic in Dubai during early 2025, the golfer revealed his struggles with mental health, particularly as an older rookie after spending years competing on the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour of Australia.
“I think being a rookie at 37 years old on the PGA Tour was, I probably wasn’t quite prepared for what that was again,” Fox told CNN. “I knew all the golf courses, knew how to travel work, knew where to stay, and everything was new on the PGA Tour, and that was probably a shock to the system more than anything.”
Coming from a distinguished sporting family, Fox’s father Grant was a prominent kicker for the New Zealand national rugby team, while his grandfather Merv Wallace represented New Zealand in cricket before coaching the national side.
The golfer has been open about the pressures inherent in professional golf, particularly following the 2024 death of former PGA Tour player Grayson Murray, whose parents confirmed the cause was suicide.
“It can be a stressful life. It’s all performance-based. There’s a lot of pressure on – Looking after your mental health is really, really important, and having people to talk to and all of that is part of that,” Fox said. “It’s a shame it got to that point with Grayson that, you know, we’ve had to have those.”
