Two Met PCs charged over death of pregnant woman
Two Met Officers Face Charges Following Fatal Crash Involving Pregnant Woman
A collision involving an unmarked police vehicle in south-east London has led to charges against two Metropolitan Police officers. The incident, which occurred on 17 October 2024 near the junction with Kidbrooke Park on the A20, resulted in the death of a 38-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child. The woman succumbed to her injuries in hospital after the child was fatally injured at the scene.
PC Chris Johnson is charged with causing death by dangerous driving, while former PC Danny Tomkins faces dangerous driving charges. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) concluded its investigation in October last year, linking Tomkins’ actions to the alleged manner of his driving. Johnson was operating the vehicle involved in the crash, whereas Tomkins was driving a second car at the time.
“The officer expressed sympathy for the family and friends of the deceased, who continue to mourn the loss of the woman and her unborn child. The IOPC’s investigation was comprehensive and intricate, with close collaboration throughout the process. At this stage, it would be premature to offer additional commentary, as the court proceedings are set to begin.”
Both officers are scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 28 May. The charges mark the culmination of an inquiry that examined the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident, highlighting the severity of the incident and its impact on the family.
