Trump warns that UK trade deal ‘can always be changed’

Trump Warns UK Trade Deal ‘Can Always Be Changed’

US President Donald Trump highlighted the flexibility of the UK trade agreement during an interview with Sky News, stating it “can always be changed.” The remark came as he discussed the evolving dynamics of the historic US-UK relationship, which has seen recent friction over international policies.

Comment on Special Relationship

When asked to define the unique bond between the two nations, Trump responded with a rhetorical question: “With who?” After clarification, he remarked, “It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there. When we needed them, they were not there. When we didn’t need them, they were not there. And they still aren’t there.”

“We gave them a good trade deal, better than I had to,”

Trump added, “And we gave them a good trade deal. Better than I had to. Which can always be changed.” Despite his criticisms, he noted that the relationship had “been better, but it’s sad.”

Strains Over Middle East Tensions

Recent weeks have seen rising tensions between the leaders of the US and UK, particularly regarding the Middle East. Trump has repeatedly criticized Sir Keir Starmer for his stance on the US-Israel war against Iran, even likening his approach to “no Winston Churchill” during a previous exchange.

“It’s the relationship where when we asked them for help, they were not there.”

Earlier in the conversation, Trump acknowledged liking Starmer but criticized his government’s immigration and energy strategies as “insane.” Despite these disagreements, he insisted the state visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla would remain a highlight, stating, “I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process.”

UK’s Early Agreement with Trump

Last May, the UK became the first country to reach a tariff deal with Trump after his return to the presidency, reducing import taxes on vehicles, aluminium, and steel. Trump’s comments suggest he remains open to revising such agreements, though he praised the UK’s “good trade deal” at the time.

“I’ve known the King for a long time, and he’s not involved in that process,”

Trump concluded, “I’ve known the King for a long time. He’s wonderful.” He emphasized that the upcoming royal state visit would not be overshadowed by current disputes, expressing anticipation for the event in late April.
