World’s best keeper? Raya helps Arsenal get back on track

Arsenal’s David Raya delivered a pivotal performance in their 1-0 Champions League win against Sporting, showcasing why he might be considered among Europe’s top goalkeepers. The match in Lisbon marked the Gunners’ seventh clean sheet in the competition this season, a record that highlights his consistency and reliability under pressure.

Raya, a Spain international, has maintained an impressive record of 22 clean sheets across all competitions in 41 appearances. His latest display, particularly in the crucial moments of the game, proved vital for Arsenal as they rebounded from a challenging spell of back-to-back losses. The team’s manager, Mikel Arteta, has emphasized Raya’s adaptability and leadership, noting his growing influence on the pitch.

Before this victory, Arsenal had faced criticism following their recent setbacks, with some questioning their ability to secure major trophies. However, Raya was not part of those defeats, as Arteta had chosen Kepa Arrizabalaga as the first-choice goalkeeper for the matches against Manchester City and Southampton. Raya’s absence in those games was a point of contention, as Kepa’s error in the Carabao Cup final gifted City the opening goal.

In the latest encounter, Raya’s heroics were unmistakable. Early on, he denied Maxi Araujo with a diving save, while three late interventions kept the tie even until Kai Havertz netted the decisive winner. “Unbelievable,” said Havertz, who praised Raya’s impact. “I think he’s still underestimated in the world of football, but for me, he’s the best keeper in the world.”

“He’s outstanding, he’s saved us so many times, and we’re very glad to have him.”

Raya’s ability extends beyond traditional goalkeeping duties. His distribution and decision-making have transformed Arsenal into a more dynamic attacking force. Arteta acknowledged this shift, stating, “The keeper in the last few years has changed and evolved rapidly. The amount of things we ask him to do is a lot.”

Despite his excellence, Arteta remained cautious about labeling Raya as the best goalkeeper in the world. “He’s extraordinary, magnificent, incredible,” the manager said, struggling to find the right words to describe his contributions. “We are so happy to have him.” Raya’s 15 clean sheets in the Premier League this season also place him at the forefront of the division’s top goalkeepers.

Raya’s achievements have positioned him as a strong contender for individual honors. He shared the Golden Glove award with Matz Sels in the 2024-25 season, but Arsenal hopes his continued success will coincide with a team triumph. As the Gunners chase silverware, Raya’s performances continue to be a cornerstone of their campaign.
