Influencer caught smuggling £150,000 of cannabis back from Thailand
A social media personality attempted to bring over £150,000 worth of cannabis into the UK through Edinburgh Airport, leading to her arrest. The 23-year-old, Ellie Crampsie, was allegedly found with 17kg of the drug in her luggage upon returning from a trip to Thailand last year.
Crampsie, based in Glasgow, operates a beauty business and regularly engages with thousands of followers by promoting nightlife events in the city. Her case came to light when Border Force officers intercepted her during a routine check at the Scottish capital. The arrest occurred in April, after she had flown from Thailand via Paris.
On March 26, she entered a guilty plea at Edinburgh Sheriff Court for her role in supplying cannabis to others. Emma Laing, the prosecutor, explained that Crampsie confirmed her travel history to Thailand during questioning. The court was informed she had 17 sealed cannabis packages in her suitcase, totaling between £115,000 and £151,000 of class-B drug.
“She was asked the usual questions by the officer and she confirmed she had travelled from Thailand,” Ms Laing stated.
Crampsie’s defense highlighted the support of her parents, who were present in court. Sheriff Graeme Watson postponed sentencing to gather a criminal justice social work report and a liberty restriction assessment. “That should be no prejudgment of what comes next, all sentencing options will be open to me on the next occasion, do you understand that?” he noted.
Similar Case Involves Young Mother
The case echoes that of a 22-year-old mother who evaded jail time after trying to smuggle £285,000 of cannabis into the UK from Thailand. Poppie Kudieersky claimed traffickers would have killed her child if she refused to act as a drug courier. She was arrested at Manchester Airport when customs officers seized two suitcases from her companion, containing 28.5kg of the drug.
