Foreign Secretary Denounces ‘Reckless Iran Threats’ After Missiles Fired at Diego Garcia
Yvette Cooper, the UK’s foreign secretary, has criticized Iran’s “reckless threats” following reports of ballistic missiles being launched at the US-UK military base on Diego Garcia. She clarified that the UK would persist in offering defensive aid against these attacks but would not escalate into a broader Middle East conflict.
Missile Attack on Diego Garcia
Two missiles were reportedly fired at Diego Garcia, a strategic island in the Chagos Archipelago. The Wall Street Journal and CNN cited unnamed US officials, stating neither weapon successfully reached its target. One missile malfunctioned mid-flight, while the other was intercepted by a US vessel. The BBC confirms the accounts are accurate.
“We will provide defensive support against these reckless Iranian threats but have not been—and continue not to be—involved in offensive action,” Cooper stated in her remarks.
Cooper highlighted Iran’s growing aggression, including threats to international shipping and Gulf allies. She urged a swift resolution to the conflict, aligning with the UK’s national interest and efforts to stabilize the region.
UK’s Agreement to Allow US Strikes
It is believed the missile attack occurred prior to the UK’s decision to permit the US to use its bases for targeting Iranian sites in the Strait of Hormuz. The agreement, announced on Friday, enables strikes on Iranian infrastructure impacting global oil flows. Cooper reiterated that the UK’s support is focused on defensive measures, not active engagement in warfare.
Political Reactions and Energy Concerns
Sir Keir Starmer will convene a Cobra meeting next week to address the war’s impact on domestic costs. The International Energy Agency anticipates energy market disruptions due to reduced oil supply. Cooper linked Iran’s actions to rising living expenses, noting the government’s focus on lowering energy bills and aiding households.
“Iran’s reckless attempt to hijack the global economy is affecting the cost of living, and supporting families remains our top priority,” Cooper added.
The Liberal Democrats and Greens have called for a Commons vote on the US base usage, while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch labeled the move a “mother of all U-turns.” Starmer also reaffirmed that RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus would not be targeted by US strikes, despite Iran’s recent drone attacks there.
Chagos Islands’ Status and Historical Context
The Chagos Islands, which have been under British control since 1814, were previously administered by Mauritius. In 1965, they were designated a British overseas territory, separating them from Mauritius before its independence. The UK compensated Mauritius with a £3m grant for this arrangement. Recently, the UK ceded sovereignty of the islands to Mauritius but retained the lease of Diego Garcia’s military base.
