From DLC to Sequel: The Evolution of Subnautica
In 2021, the game saw a spin-off titled Subnautica: Below Zero, which initially served as a downloadable content expansion before evolving into a standalone title. A sequel was later announced in 2022, promising cooperative gameplay for up to four players and new content to expand the franchise.
Initially planned for early 2025, Subnautica 2 faced multiple setbacks, including staff layoffs and internal conflicts. These issues were compounded by a lawsuit from the team that had been dismissed by Krafton, the parent company of Unknown Worlds. The legal battle centered around allegations that the company had obstructed development to prevent the team from achieving a $250 million bonus.
“Thanks to your dedication and talent, we’ve added more story chapters, built new creatures, and created new biomes along with many other features,” stated Steve Papoutsis, CEO of Unknown Worlds, in a recent update.
Following a March 2026 ruling, the court ordered Krafton to reinstate Ted Gill as CEO of Unknown Worlds and restore his authority over Subnautica 2’s launch. The decision cited the company’s breach of the Employment Protection Act, accusing Krafton of terminating key employees without valid cause and seizing control of the studio.
Krafton responded by stating its disagreement with the ruling, emphasizing it is still evaluating its options. The company noted that the legal outcome does not finalize claims for damages or the bonus tied to the game’s success, with further proceedings in motion.
With the latest developments, Subnautica 2 is now poised to enter early access in May 2026. The studio’s focus remains on delivering an engaging experience to its fanbase, as outlined in its recent statements.
