Jamie Carragher names the signing that could win Arsenal the Premier League title
Jamie Carragher has suggested that David Raya might be instrumental in securing Arsenal’s Premier League title, contrasting his views on Gianluigi Donnarumma’s role in Manchester City’s campaign. The former Liverpool defender emphasized the critical impact of Raya’s performances, particularly during key matches for the Gunners.
Earlier this month, Carragher had expressed skepticism about Manchester City’s ability to challenge Arsenal for the title, citing their goalkeeping situation as a weakness. However, his opinion shifted after Donnarumma joined the Etihad Stadium from PSG, a move he believes has significantly bolstered City’s prospects.
“At the start of the season, I didn’t think there was any way City could win the league because of the goalkeeping situation,” Carragher stated. “No one wins a Premier League without an absolutely great goalkeeper, and there’s no doubt about Donnarumma—Champions League winner and Euros star with Italy.”
Donnarumma’s arrival at City, despite the club’s earlier signing of James Trafford, marked a strategic shift aimed at strengthening their defensive line. The 27-year-old Italian has since made a notable impression, contributing to several crucial results for the team. Yet, a rare lapse in concentration during a 1-1 draw with West Ham proved pivotal, as it allowed Arsenal to stay within striking distance of City in the title race.
Arsenal’s 2-0 victory over Everton saw a standout performance from 16-year-old Max Dowman, who grabbed headlines with a goal that made him the youngest scorer in Premier League history. Raya, meanwhile, played a vital role in the win, making sharp saves to keep the score goalless before the late goals sealed the three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.
Carragher highlighted Raya’s brilliance during the match on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, asserting that the goalkeeper could be a cornerstone of Arsenal’s success. “If they [Arsenal] do win the title, he’s been one of the biggest reasons why,” Carragher added. “That save when the game was 0-0 was absolutely brilliant and kept the score goalless.”
Arsenal and Manchester City have continued their pursuit of the league title without interruption, balancing cup fixtures with league commitments. The Gunners will face Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, while City prepares for a Real Madrid clash. Their paths will cross again in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
John Terry recently compared Max Dowman to Lionel Messi, underscoring the teenager’s remarkable impact. Carragher, however, focused on the broader implications of goalkeeping decisions, noting that Donnarumma’s error in the West Ham game had a direct effect on the title race. “That was the goal that brought it back to 1-1,” he explained. “Man City couldn’t go on to get that winning goal.”
