Inside Jeffrey Epstein’s inner circle — the aides, lawyers and confidants who ran his world
Jeffrey Epstein’s Inner Circle: The Core Team Behind His Global Operations
Jeffrey Epstein thrived within elite networks of influence, maintaining connections with a range of high-profile figures like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. A collection of emails and documents published by the Justice Department in January shed light on his extensive web of relationships. However, Epstein’s closest associates remained a smaller, more obscure group, operating in the shadows to support his financial empire and social standing.
Behind-the-Scenes Operators
Epstein’s core team included his legal counsel, financial advisor, personal assistant, and others who managed his global operations from behind the scenes. Roles spanned from handling his business ventures and properties to overseeing logistics like travel arrangements and cash transactions. These individuals, who were integral to his daily life, have largely maintained silence about their involvement, despite denying any knowledge of his alleged misconduct.
“There is no way that I could lose Lesley to motherhood,” Epstein told The New York Times in 2005.
Among them was Lesley Groff, whose role as Epstein’s executive assistant was detailed in a 2010 payroll record. She managed his schedule, booked travel, and acted as a liaison with prominent individuals. When Groff became pregnant in 2004, Epstein provided her with a Mercedes-Benz E320 and agreed to cover the cost of a full-time nanny, ensuring her continued service. An attorney for Groff did not respond to CNN’s inquiry.
Documents Reveal Hidden Dynamics
The newly disclosed files offer a glimpse into the intimate workings of Epstein’s circle, showing how they aided his lifestyle and crimes. Some members were responsible for withdrawing large sums of cash, establishing shell companies, and funding the education of young women he favored. Others coordinated travel for guests at his properties and installed hidden cameras in at least one instance. According to survivors, massages scheduled by the team became a setting for Epstein’s grooming and abuse of young girls.
Though Epstein’s inner circle was less scrutinized than his public connections, attention is shifting. Over the next several months, several individuals are set to appear before the House Oversight Committee, including Richard Kahn, his longtime accountant, and Darren Indyke, his personal attorney. Both are co-executors of Epstein’s estate, which established a victims’ compensation fund distributing around $125 million before closing in 2021.
Legal Challenges and Unresolved Claims
Recently, Kahn and Indyke settled a class-action lawsuit from Epstein’s victims, who accused them of being key facilitators in his sex trafficking schemes. The settlement, pending judicial approval, would allocate up to $35 million to survivors without requiring the pair to acknowledge guilt, as stated by their legal representative. Meanwhile, a government diagram pinpointed several members of Epstein’s circle, but only Ghislaine Maxwell, his ex-girlfriend and accomplice, was charged as a co-conspirator. She now faces a 20-year sentence for federal sex trafficking offenses.
Many in Epstein’s circle worked closely with him for years until his arrest in July 2019. Some were mentioned in his will, set to receive millions in compensation, though the document has yet to be finalized. As the investigation continues, the roles of these individuals in Epstein’s world are coming into sharper focus.
