Homicide Probe Begins in Los Angeles Following 12-Year-Old’s Death in Bullying Incident
A homicide investigation is now active in Los Angeles following the death of a 12-year-old student who sustained a brain injury during a bullying altercation at Reseda High School. NBC Los Angeles reported the incident on Friday, citing the Los Angeles Police Department’s involvement. The girl’s family claims she was struck in the head with a metal water bottle, thrown by another student, during an alleged confrontation.
Family Details Tragic Outcome
Khimberly Zavaleta’s mother, Elma Chuquipa, expressed profound grief, stating in Spanish, “I’m devastated. I’m full of pain, thinking about how I will never see my daughter again.” The girl had been in a coma for several days and underwent emergency surgery before passing away at the hospital early Wednesday morning. Chuquipa’s emotional account underscores the family’s anguish over the loss.
Students Rally in Support
On Friday, a group of students organized a demonstration at Reseda High School to honor Khimberly. Dayari Diaz, her friend and protest co-ordinator, shared, “We’re all sad. Because she was the one who gave all the energy to us, because she was so happy. She was always happy. She was always smiling.” Diaz emphasized the community’s demand for justice, adding, “We want justice for her. The school is not doing anything.”
School District Commits to Support
In response, the LA Unified School District released a statement expressing sorrow over the student’s death. While the district cannot disclose specifics due to confidentiality, it affirmed its dedication to aiding those impacted, including counseling and enhanced resources on campus. “The District remains committed to providing support to students, staff, and families affected by this loss,” the statement read.
