Kim Jong Un’s Dandong Visit Signals a New Phase for China-North Korea Trade

Healfromzero.com – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made a highly symbolic journey into the Chinese border city of Dandong on Saturday, using the newly opened New Yalu River Bridge as China and North Korea seek to strengthen economic ties after years of disruption.

The crossing drew attention because the bridge is more than a transport link. It is expected to improve the movement of heavy machinery, raw materials and energy-related goods needed for North Korea’s development plans. Its opening this month has created a major new land route between the two countries after a lengthy delay.

Kim was welcomed in Dandong by Wang Huning, China’s fourth-ranked official, who conveyed greetings from Chinese President Xi Jinping. The visit followed two summits between Kim and Xi during the past 13 months, underscoring renewed high-level engagement between Beijing and Pyongyang.

A bridge with economic and political weight

The 3-kilometer, or roughly 2-mile, New Yalu River Bridge is the most significant new land border crossing between China and North Korea. It links Dandong with North Korea across the Yalu River, a waterway that has long represented both the connection and the strategic divide between the two neighbors.

For years, the bridge stood unused despite being completed, reflecting a period in which bilateral relations appeared strained and cross-border activity was further limited by pandemic-era restrictions. Its activation now removes a major logistical obstacle for commercial exchange.

“Kim has given his imprimatur to bilateral trade by crossing the New Yalu River Bridge to enter China.”

Christopher Green, a Korea specialist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, said the bridge’s delayed launch had illustrated how troubled the relationship had become. Kim’s decision to personally use it, he said, gives fresh political weight to efforts to revive trade.

Wang told Kim during their meeting that China was prepared to use the bridge opening to deepen people-to-people contact as well as economic and trade cooperation. That message places the new crossing at the center of a broader effort to make commercial links more regular and reliable.

“The opening of the bridge has resolved a major bottleneck in China-North Korea trade logistics.”

Lu Chao, an expert on China-North Korea relations at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in Shenyang, said easing transport constraints could lead to further growth in bilateral commerce.

“With the logistics constraint eased, bilateral trade is likely to increase further.”

Tributes to a shared wartime history

Kim’s itinerary also emphasized the historical foundations of the relationship. Wang accompanied him to a Korean War memorial in Dandong, where Kim paid tribute to members of the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army who fought alongside North Korean forces during the 1950-1953 conflict.

China’s role in that war remains central to the political relationship between the two states. Beijing has continued to serve as North Korea’s principal economic and diplomatic supporter, accounting for the majority of Pyongyang’s officially recorded trade.

Kim also visited an automobile factory in Dandong, adding an industrial dimension to a trip focused heavily on economic cooperation. The city is one of China’s most important gateways to North Korea and has long been a focal point for cross-border trade, travel and logistics.

Footage on Chinese state television showed Kim walking across the bridge toward North Korea while people lined the route and waved flags. A South Korean government official said Kim had arrived in Dandong through the new crossing and was expected to return home after the Saturday visit.

China ties remain vital as North Korea works more closely with Russia

The trip comes as North Korea’s expanding military relationship with Russia has prompted debate over whether Pyongyang may be less dependent on China than in the past. North Korea and Russia have deepened their ties since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Even so, Kim’s visit to Dandong points to the continuing importance of China for North Korea’s economy and international position. The reopening of a major trade route offers a practical reminder that Beijing remains essential to North Korea’s access to goods, transport networks and diplomatic support.

Kim’s most recently known trip to China before this visit took place in September 2025, when he attended the 80th Victory Day commemorations in Beijing and met Xi. Xi later made a state visit to North Korea in June, another indication that senior-level contact has become more frequent.

The renewed China-North Korea engagement unfolds amid a wider regional diplomatic calendar. US President Donald Trump has sought to restart talks with North Korea, although US and South Korean officials have seen diminishing prospects for a Kim-Trump meeting this year. China is also preparing to host an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Shenzhen next month, an event Trump is expected to attend.

For Dandong, the bridge crossing carries local importance as well as geopolitical significance. A functioning transport route can help restore commercial activity that depends on predictable cross-border movement. For Beijing and Pyongyang, it provides a visible demonstration that their relationship is moving from ceremonial exchanges toward more concrete economic cooperation.
