China’s Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge Is Drawing Visitors as Well as Traffic

Healfromzero.com – High in the mountains of Guizhou province, a bridge designed to transform regional travel has become an attraction in its own right. The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge rises 625 meters (2,051 feet) over the Beipan River, placing its deck dramatically above the canyon and earning recognition from Guinness World Records as the world’s highest bridge.

When it opened in September 2025, the immense crossing offered a practical shortcut between mountain communities. A trip that had previously taken about two hours across the canyon could now be completed in roughly two minutes. Yet its effect has reached far beyond transport: the bridge is bringing a growing stream of sightseers, adventure travelers and online creators into an area that once saw comparatively few outside visitors.

From opening day through August 2026, local officials recorded about 3.3 million visitors at the site. That number illustrates how rapidly major infrastructure can develop a second purpose in China’s tourism economy, especially when a structure offers views and experiences unavailable elsewhere.

A canyon crossing built on an extraordinary scale

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge extends nearly 2.9 kilometers (1.8 miles) across a deep mountain gorge. Its pair of large teal-colored towers stands out against the rugged terrain, while the river below appears far beneath the road deck. The height is especially striking when compared with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge: Huajiang’s roadway sits almost nine times farther above the water.

China has spent decades building bridges, roads and tunnels through difficult landscapes, particularly in mountainous western and southwestern regions. Such projects can reduce isolation for rural towns and connect them more directly to larger economic networks. At Huajiang, however, the bridge’s engineering scale has become part of the destination.

Visitors are able to enter portions of the structure rather than simply drive across it. Glass viewing platforms provide a clear, vertigo-inducing look into the canyon. An exposed path beneath the roadway allows harnessed guests to walk along the bridge’s side, surrounded by open air and distant mountain ridges.

For some, the chief attraction is bungee jumping. Before taking the leap, participants are secured in a harness while staff inspect the equipment on a platform below the roadway. Then comes a seven-second descent toward the canyon floor hundreds of meters below, followed by the recoil of the massive cord. Crowds commonly gather with phones ready, turning each jump into a shared spectacle.

Tourism changes the outlook for nearby villages

The growing popularity of the bridge is also reshaping business prospects in communities within the canyon. Lin Guoquan, who spent years working as a chef in Yunnan, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, returned to Guizhou with a plan to welcome travelers to his family’s village.

He began repurposing older houses, including the home of his grandparents, as guest lodging. What started with nine rooms has expanded quickly as demand rose.

“When we first opened, we only had nine rooms. Now we have expanded to 52, and we still don’t have enough rooms for all our guests,” Lin said.

The rush of visitors was particularly visible during the nine-day Chinese New Year holiday in February 2026, when the bridge’s service area logged more than 300,000 visits. That total exceeded the population of Buffalo, New York, underscoring the scale of holiday travel passing through the canyon.

For local hosts, the appeal is not limited to the bridge itself. Guests may come for the observation decks or the thrill rides, but accommodation, food and village experiences can help extend their stay and spread tourism spending beyond the main site. Lin’s experience shows how a major transport project can create opportunities for small, family-run businesses when visitors have reasons to stop rather than continue immediately along the road.

The digital connection behind the physical landmark

Reaching travelers now requires more than a newly built highway. Lin has attracted over 100,000 followers on Douyin, China’s equivalent of TikTok, by livestreaming scenes of village life with the bridge visible above. His videos have helped turn online interest into bookings and travel questions from prospective guests.

“Lots of people book rooms at my homestay after watching my videos. They ask me for travel advice,” he said.

That online visibility depends on dependable mobile service, something the area did not always have in abundance. China Mobile, the state-owned telecommunications provider, and Huawei have expanded local network capacity by adding base stations to serve increasing visitor numbers.

“What people see is this mighty physical bridge,” said Zhou Jianguo, a member of Huawei’s China strategy and business development division. “Yet a bridge in the digital world is equally necessary.”

The observation captures the broader transformation around Huajiang. The bridge connects opposite sides of a canyon in minutes, while stronger digital links help local residents reach potential customers far beyond Guizhou. Together, those connections are helping convert a remarkable engineering project into a new tourism center.

For motorists, Huajiang may be a faster route through the mountains. For visitors standing on glass floors, walking high above the gorge or preparing to jump into the canyon’s vast open space, it is something much more memorable: a destination built around the experience of crossing the landscape itself.
