Taxi driver ‘attacked passenger for burping in his car’

A taxi operator was detained in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, after an alleged incident involving an Irish tourist who was accused of burping inside the vehicle. The 65-year-old victim suffered serious head and face injuries when he was reportedly punched to the ground during the altercation.

Following the attack, the individual was transported to a health facility in Las Lagunas before being transferred to a hospital in Marbella for further treatment. The 51-year-old driver is believed to have ordered the unnamed tourist out of the cab, citing the burping as the reason for the confrontation.

According to reports, the passenger hit his head on the curb after being thrown to the ground. A friend accompanying him at the time remained unharmed, though the incident occurred near a hotel on the seafront promenade. The victim’s current condition is unclear, with authorities stating he may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.

The driver was apprehended by National Police rapid response officers and paramedics, who arrived after being alerted by witnesses. He was released on bail following an appearance before an investigating judge, while a criminal inquiry into the incident continues.

Authorities noted this is not the first time a similar dispute has arisen in the area. Last November, a taxi driver was arrested for allegedly dragging a tourist along the road after an argument over the fare. The incident involved a suitcase, with the victim suffering head injuries when the driver accelerated and lost grip of a door handle.

Both cases were linked to the same hospital, where the Irish tourist and the second individual—whose nationality was not disclosed—were treated. The second visitor appeared unscathed, though the details of the earlier incident involved the tourist being chased by the driver with his belongings.
