Why has the US targeted Iran’s Kharg Island?
President Donald Trump announced that U.S. military forces had conducted an airstrike on a small island near Iran’s coast, where a key oil terminal operates. This terminal, situated on Kharg Island, is vital to Iran’s economy. While Trump claimed that military installations on the island were “completely destroyed,” he emphasized that the oil facilities remained untouched. However, he hinted that the decision to spare the terminal could shift if Iran or allies disrupted safe shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island, located just 15 nautical miles (24km) from Iran’s shoreline, plays a central role in the country’s energy sector. Despite its modest size, it is critical for oil exports. Nearly 90% of Iran’s crude oil flows through the terminal here, which connects to the mainland via pipelines. Massive tankers can dock at the island’s extensive jetties to load oil, thanks to its proximity to deep-water channels. These vessels then navigate the Gulf and exit through the Strait of Hormuz, where China, Iran’s primary oil buyer, receives the cargo.
The U.S. Central Command (Centcom) stated that over 90 military targets were hit on Kharg Island during the strike. These included naval mine depots, missile storage areas, and other defense sites. Trump described the operation as “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the history of the Middle East,” focusing on Iran’s military assets. He added that “for reasons of decency,” the oil infrastructure was left intact, though he suggested it might be targeted later if Iran escalated tensions.
Iranian Response and Casualty Reports
Iranian officials asserted that oil and energy infrastructure owned by U.S.-backed firms would be “instantly destroyed” in retaliation for any attack on the terminal. State media claimed no damage occurred to the oil facilities, while semi-official outlets reported that air defenses, a naval base, and an airport control tower were among the sites hit. Ehsan Jahanian, a political deputy in Bushehr province, noted that “no military personnel, oil company staff, or island residents were harmed,” and that the island’s oil export operations continued without interruption.
“He’s showing it as being merciful but saying he could be more punishing to the IRGC” by focusing on the oil facilities, said Justin Crump, a military analyst and former British Army officer.
Crump argued that the attack aimed to deter Iran from escalating the conflict further. Trump’s goal, he explained, was to pressure the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and potentially spark domestic unrest against the regime. Although the president later cited other motives for the war, the strike on Kharg Island underscored the strategic importance of the region. If the oil infrastructure were destroyed, it would cripple Iran’s economy and likely provoke a stronger response from the country’s military.
