Trump-backed Republican Clay Fuller wins election to replace Marjorie Taylor Greene

Georgia’s runoff election has seen Republican Clay Fuller emerge victorious in replacing outgoing Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had previously aligned closely with Donald Trump before resigning this year. The result, reported by CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, ensures the conservative-leaning district remains under Republican control. Fuller, a Trump-endorsed candidate, defeated Democrat Shawn Harris in the contest, which took place on Tuesday. This win strengthens the party’s slim 217-214 majority in the House of Representatives.

Fuller, a lieutenant colonel in the Georgia Air National Guard, will complete the remaining term of Greene, set to conclude in January. He credited Trump’s backing as “the key factor in us winning” during an interview with Fox News, emphasizing the president’s role in the victory. “He was the difference-maker,” Fuller stated. “He made all the difference in the world. It was the honour of my lifetime to be able to get his endorsement.”

“In general, part of President Trump’s strategy in endorsing Fuller was this recognition that the most red meat, MAGA-affiliated candidate in this particular instance, might be off-putting to voters in the middle,” said Andra Gillespie, a political science professor at Emory University. “This was an attempt to not lose those voters.”

A special election held on 10 March resulted in no candidate securing a majority, prompting the runoff. Harris, who had a slight edge in that initial vote, now aims to challenge Fuller again in the November midterms. He expressed confidence on social media, stating, “This wasn’t the result we wanted, but the message is clear — people here are ready for leadership that puts them first. The fight continues. On to November!”

The 14th congressional district, covering northwest Georgia from Atlanta suburbs to the Tennessee border, is predominantly rural and Republican-leaning. However, areas near the city of Rome and closer to Atlanta contain Democratic voters. Trump had actively campaigned to retain the seat, aware that even minor shifts in support could impact the party’s fragile majority. His public endorsement of Fuller was a strategic move to solidify backing ahead of the midterms.

Fuller, who served as a White House fellow during Trump’s first term, advocates for policies aligned with the president’s priorities, including stricter immigration controls and mass deportation efforts. His rise in the crowded Republican primary was largely fueled by Trump’s support, which proved decisive in the runoff. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party had viewed the district as a potential target, with former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg engaging with Harris in March to bolster his chances.

Despite Harris’s efforts to leverage the run-off’s timing, several factors had to align for him to succeed. The narrow Republican majority in the House means any defections could disrupt legislative outcomes, making the race a critical test of party loyalty. Trump’s continued engagement with the electorate underscores the importance of maintaining control in such a pivotal region.
