Seven arrested at base demo accused of supporting banned group

Seven Individuals Apprehended at RAF Base Protest Linked to Banned Group

Suffolk Police reported the detention of seven people on Sunday, alleging their involvement in supporting Palestine Action, a group designated as banned. The arrests occurred during a peace demonstration at Lakenheath airbase, where protesters opposed military operations in Iran. The protest was sparked by media reports suggesting a US fighter jet downed in Iran on Friday had been stationed at the base.

Protest Context and Police Statement

The detainees, comprising five males and two females, were taken to the Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for further inquiry. A spokesperson for the police emphasized that the arrests were made under “suspicion of supporting a proscribed organisation,” stating that their duty is to uphold the law impartially. “Where offences are identified, appropriate measures will be implemented,” they added.

The High Court recently deemed the proscription of Palestine Action unlawful, yet permitted the Home Office to pursue an appeal. This decision keeps the group’s status as banned until the appeal concludes. The protest at Lakenheath was part of a six-day campaign, including a continuous vigil outside the base, set to conclude on Monday.

Lakenheath Alliance For Peace noted that the arrests followed a speech by retired colonel Chris Romberg to the gathering of demonstrators. Additionally, Suffolk Police confirmed two individuals had been charged with obstructing traffic after a blockade was set up at the base on Saturday.
