Savannah Guthrie feared her mother may have been targeted because of her fame

Savannah Guthrie’s Deep Concern Over Her Mother’s Disappearance

Savannah Guthrie has expressed her profound fear and emotional turmoil following her mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. In her first post-missing interview, she shared how the uncertainty surrounding her mother’s fate has weighed heavily on her. “I’m unsure whether her status as my mother and the recognition she has as a co-anchor of ‘TODAY’ made her a target,” she said during a conversation with Hoda Kotb. “It’s possible someone thought, ‘That lady has money— we can make a quick profit.’ It makes sense, but we still don’t know. That thought is unbearable, especially knowing I might have brought this to her doorstep.”

The Disappearance

Nancy Guthrie, 84, vanished from her home near Tucson, Arizona, over seven weeks ago. Her absence was reported on February 1 after she missed a virtual church service at a friend’s residence. Authorities noted she was last seen the previous evening at approximately 9:45 p.m., following a dinner at her daughter Annie Guthrie’s home. The family quickly realized something grave had occurred, with Savannah revealing her brother’s immediate suspicion. “He saw it clearly from the start,” she recalled. “Even when I called him, he knew. He said, ‘I think she’s been kidnapped for ransom.’ I replied, ‘What? Why? What?’”

Clues and Family Reactions

Savannah described the troubling signs that emerged after her mother went missing. “Annie and Tommy were certain from the beginning that this wasn’t a simple case of someone wandering off,” she explained. “Mom has a bad back and deals with severe pain. On good days, she could manage to walk to the mailbox, but most days, she couldn’t.” The scene at the home included open back doors, blood on the front steps, and a Ring camera that had been pulled down. “Her phone and purse were still there, along with all her belongings,” Savannah added, emphasizing the sense of something deliberate. “That didn’t fit with a medical emergency.”

Ransom Notes and Ongoing Search

As the investigation progressed, Savannah and her siblings began receiving multiple ransom notes. She believes two of them are authentic. “There were several notes, but I think most are fake,” she said. “Still, someone who sends a counterfeit note has to be aware of the impact on a family in distress. I’m convinced the two we acted on are genuine.” The search has involved state and federal agencies, with efforts including land searches, neighbor video footage, and analysis of the notes. Savannah expressed her anguish in a tearful Instagram video, appealing for help from anyone who might know about her mother’s whereabouts. “We’re ready to talk,” she said, adding, “This feels surreal.”

A Family in Crisis

The Guthrie family has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery. Savannah has repeatedly apologized, stating, “I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry. I’m sorry to my sister, my brother, my kids, and my nephew and Tommy.” Her brother-in-law’s support was evident early on, as he and her sister quickly ruled out a spontaneous disappearance. “They were sure from the beginning,” Savannah said, highlighting the family’s shared belief that a deliberate act was at play. As days turn into weeks, the search continues, with Savannah still haunted by the possibility that her own fame could have placed her mother in danger.
