Man arrested after baby girl dies from dog bite
A 45-year-old man was taken into custody following the death of a three-month-old girl in a suspected dog attack, according to police. The incident occurred in Redcar, with officers responding to reports of a child in distress shortly after 13:30 BST on Thursday. During the operation, police with firearms were dispatched to an address on Hardale Grove, Dormanstown, where they eliminated a dog on the street and another at the residence.
Authorities believe the infant succumbed to injuries caused by a dog bite. A 31-year-old woman was also bitten on her arm during the event and was treated at a hospital. Both animals were evaluated by a specialist officer, who confirmed they were not of a prohibited breed. The man was released on conditional bail pending further investigation.
Police statement on ongoing inquiry
Ch Supt Rachel Stockdale, head of local policing, stated that a police presence will remain at the location as the investigation proceeds. “We are with the child’s family during this tragic and distressing incident,” she added. “I am requesting that their privacy be upheld during this challenging period.”
The Cleveland Police urged anyone with information, including video footage, to contact them. They emphasized the importance of supporting the family as the case unfolds. The force is also seeking witnesses or additional details to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.
