French authorities report four fatalities in English Channel crossing attempt
Local officials in Calais have confirmed that four individuals lost their lives during an attempt to cross the English Channel near northern France. The incident involved a taxi boat that sank, as detailed in a press statement released by French authorities through Reuters. The situation is still under evaluation, with officials noting that conditions may shift as investigations continue.
“A taxi boat sank today, leading to the incident. The situation is still under evaluation and could evolve,” said local French authorities in Calais.
Rescue Operations in Progress
Rescue efforts are currently underway on Thursday morning following the incident off the coast of Boulogne, between the beaches of Équihen and Écault, south of Calais. A press conference is set to address the event shortly. Emergency services have reported caring for around 30 people at the scene, with firefighters and intensive care units arriving at 07:30 local time (06:30 BST) to provide aid.
Crossing Trends and Weather Impact
Recent data shows a rise in Channel crossings during the summer months. In 2025, 41,472 individuals reached the UK via small boats. However, between 1 January and 26 March 2026, 4,441 people crossed from France, a 33% drop compared to the same period in 2025 when 6,642 arrivals were recorded. Officials suggest weather conditions may have influenced this decline, with rougher seas observed in the Channel relative to the prior year.
