Football rally in Peru leaves one dead and dozens injured

A tragic event unfolded during a pre-match gathering at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Lima, Peru, where one fan lost their life and over 40 others were injured. The Peruvian Health Minister, Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero, confirmed the death and stated that 47 individuals were treated for injuries, three of whom remain in critical condition.

Initial reports claimed parts of the stadium’s wall had collapsed, but this was later challenged by officials. Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo noted that the southern stands’ structure was intact, asserting, “There are no collapsed walls or sections that fell into the pit,” according to his remarks to reporters.

“According to preliminary data, the incident is unrelated to the collapse of stadium walls or structural facilities,” said Alianza Lima, the home team, in a statement posted on X.

The Peruvian Professional Football League assured that Saturday’s match against local rivals Universitario de Deportes would proceed as planned. However, the interior ministry had previously reported that 40 firefighters were called to an emergency involving people trapped in a structure.

“The structure of the southern stands appeared to be in good condition,” stated Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo, addressing the situation with clarity.

Authorities continue to investigate the event’s circumstances, with the league emphasizing its dedication to ensuring the safety of spectators at all matches.
