Ex-Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore Accepts Plea Deal to Drop Stalking, Home Invasion Charges

On Friday, a judge ruled to dismiss multiple criminal charges against former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. The original allegations included felony home invasion, misdemeanor stalking, and misdemeanor breaking and entering, all of which were removed from the case in Washtenaw County. In exchange, Moore pleaded no contest to two lesser misdemeanor charges: malicious use of a telecommunications device in the context of a domestic relationship and trespassing.

Moore’s legal team argued that the initial charges were unjustified. Defense attorney Ellen Michaels stated, “From the beginning, we maintained that the felony of stalking charge and the entry without permission charge, all the charges against Mr. Moore, were not supported by facts and law.” She emphasized that the dismissal validated their early concerns about the investigation’s foundation.

“I’m going to kill myself,” a prosecutor recounted Moore’s alleged words to the victim. “‘I’m going to make you watch my blood is on your hands. You ruined my life.'” According to police, Moore entered the home of the woman he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with through an unlocked door, retrieving two butter knives and a pair of scissors before making the threat.

Moore was dismissed from his position at the university in December after an investigation revealed his “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. The Wolverines’ performance under his leadership included an 8-5 record in his first season in 2024 and a 9-3 campaign the previous year before his termination. Now, he is scheduled for sentencing on April 14.

Prosecutors highlighted the agreement as a balance of accountability and public safety, noting, “As with any case our office handles, the plea agreement was reached following evaluation of the factual, evidentiary, and legal circumstances — and the overarching need for accountability and public safety.” They expressed hope that the resolution would aid the victim’s recovery.

Michigan has since appointed former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham to lead the football program amid ongoing scrutiny. The case against Moore underscores the complexities of personal and professional consequences in high-profile sports roles.
