Ex-footballer Barton denies attack at golf club
Joey Barton, a retired footballer, has refuted claims of attacking a man at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old, based in Widnes, was brought to Liverpool Crown Court via video link from Liverpool Prison for a plea and trial preparation hearing. This follows his earlier denial of bail during a magistrates’ court session.
Barton, along with co-accused Gary O’Grady, 50, faces charges of grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent against Kevin Lynch, 51, a former non-league football manager and founder of NexGen Academy. The alleged assault occurred at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March. During a prior court session, it was disclosed that the accused had consumed alcohol with Lynch at the golf club prior to the incident. Lynch sustained severe eye injuries during the attack.
O’Grady appeared in court but did not enter a plea. Barton, who once played as a midfielder for several clubs including Manchester City, Newcastle United, QPR, Rangers, Burnley, and Marseille, also had a managerial stint at Fleetwood. The trial, which will last seven days, is scheduled to begin on 1 September.
