Dogs found crammed in living room ‘doing really well’, says RSPCA
The RSPCA reported that approximately 250 canines rescued from a property with severe overcrowding are currently thriving. These poodle crossbreeds, discovered in January at an unspecified location in the UK, were initially described as living in conditions that had “rapidly grown out of control amid extenuating family circumstances.”
Lee Hopgood, the RSPCA’s operational superintendent for the North of England, shared an update during BBC Breakfast, noting that “surprisingly… the dogs are fine and doing really, really well.” Despite their improved state, many were found in poor health, with coats that were “matted and crusted,” requiring immediate care.
“Many of the dogs have now been successfully rehomed and are enjoying life in their forever homes,” stated a Dogs Trust representative. The organization also mentioned that some dogs still remain in their care, including those who have given birth while under their supervision.
One notable case involves Boone, a poodle-cross dog who was adopted by Dermot Murphy, a former RSPCA inspectorate commissioner. Murphy featured Boone on BBC Breakfast earlier this week, highlighting the animal’s transition to a new life.
Factors behind the overcrowding
The RSPCA linked the situation to potential causes such as mental health challenges, the ongoing cost of living crisis, or inadequate breeding practices. In a statement on Wednesday, the charity opted not to pursue legal action, citing the “extremely vulnerable nature” of the owners.
Clarifying the AI image controversy
In response to claims that a “shocking” image of dozens of dogs crammed into a living room was AI-generated, the RSPCA confirmed it was a real photograph. The image, taken by a rescuer, underscores the “staggering reality” of multi-animal incidents, which have risen by 70% in England and Wales since 2021.
Poodle-cross dogs, also called “doodles,” have surged in popularity, as noted in a 2025 Dogs Trust survey that placed them among the top three crossbreeds owned. Earlier in November, the RSPCA rescued 80 dogs, predominantly chihuahuas, pomeranians, and crossbreeds, from a home in Bedfordshire.
