EastEnders baby emergency as in-agony Nicola is rushed hospital
Intense moments await for Nicola Mitchell (Laura Doddington) in EastEnders next week, as she is abruptly taken to the hospital after sudden, severe pain. The club owner, who is expecting her first child with former Queen Vic landlord George Knight (Colin Salmon), faces a crisis when she becomes entangled in a conflict with Penny Branning (Kitty Castledine).
Amid the planning for George’s new restaurant, Nicola’s attention is diverted by her concern over Penny’s unborn child. She discovers that her son Harry Mitchell (Elijah Holloway) might be the father, not Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota), and demands a DNA test from Penny to confirm the truth or risk exposing her secret.
When Nicola arrives at the hospital, tests show the baby is healthy, but her return to the Square brings another confrontation with Penny. Despite Harry’s urging to seek medical help again, she chooses to stay home, concealing her discomfort from George. The situation escalates as she hides her growing pains, determined to maintain her composure.
“Nicola is used to handling challenges alone and doesn’t want to add stress to George’s plate,” explains Laura Doddington, who portrays the character. “She’s burdened by personal worries, persuading herself they might not be real. With past experiences of false labor, she believes this could simply be another false alarm.”
As George’s restaurant grand opening approaches, Harry grows anxious about Nicola’s absence. Unbeknownst to them, Nicola is already in labor back at No.1. When George and Harry check on her, they find her in distress and quickly take her to the hospital. There, Nicola shares her fears of an early birth, only to face unexpected complications requiring an emergency caesarean.
Following the delivery of a baby girl, Nicola must remain isolated from her newborn due to an infection. This separation leaves her emotionally shattered, contrasting with her typically assertive parenting style. “This week, the emotional weight and inability to hold her baby take a heavy toll,” says Laura. “She’s broken, and the situation becomes heart-wrenching, especially as others can see the baby while she cannot.”
George now watches his newborn daughter, named Ivy, through an incubator in the NICU. Will the couple overcome their challenges and reunite with their child? The drama continues as EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 30th March at 7.30pm on BBC One or streams first from 6am on iPlayer.
