What we know about the late Sen. Lindsey Graham’s funeral plans

Comprehensive Details Emerge Regarding Senator Lindsey Graham’s Memorial Arrangements

Two-Day Celebration of Life Scheduled Across Washington and South Carolina

Healfromzero.com – Memorial services honoring the late Republican Senator Lindsey Graham are set to unfold over an extended two-day period beginning next week. The comprehensive schedule encompasses a distinguished ceremony at the United States Capitol alongside a personal tribute from President Donald Trump. Senator Darline Graham, who serves as the late South Carolina politician’s sister and was subsequently appointed to complete the remaining portion of his congressional term, revealed on Tuesday that the commemorative events will span both Washington, DC, and South Carolina. The Washington portion is scheduled for July 28, while South Carolina will host its observances on July 29.

Graham passed away earlier in the current month at the age of 71. According to preliminary findings released by the Washington, DC, medical examiner, the cause of death was identified as an aortic dissection, which represents a tear within the artery. This medical condition proved fatal despite medical intervention.

Capitol Ceremony Honors Military and Political Legacy

The opening day of services commences at the US Capitol, where Graham’s distinguished military and political career will receive formal recognition. An Armed Forces Body Bearer Team will transport his remains into the Capitol building, symbolizing his dedicated service within the Air Force. Once inside the historic building, this military team will be succeeded by a US Capitol Police memorial guard, representing his extensive tenure as a United States senator.

A special ceremony within the Capitol Rotunda will follow these proceedings, according to Senate Majority Leader John Thune. Thune provided a heartfelt statement regarding Graham’s impact on his colleagues.

“For so many of us in the Senate and the House, myself included, Lindsey was more than a colleague, he was a friend,” Thune said in a statement. “From the military to state politics to decades of representing South Carolinians in Congress, Lindsey dedicated his life to giving back through public service. As we say our final goodbyes, it seems fitting for his friends and colleagues to give back to him through this special Capitol honor.”

Trump to Deliver Tribute at National Cathedral

Following the Capitol proceedings, Graham’s remains will be transported to the Washington National Cathedral for a funeral service scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Eastern Time. President Trump is expected to deliver a personal tribute during this ceremony. The late senator maintained a complex relationship with the president, having initially been a critic before evolving into one of Trump’s most steadfast allies on Capitol Hill.

Trump expressed his sorrow to CNN’s Jake Tapper following news of Graham’s passing. “What a terrible loss it is,” Trump remarked. “He’s a great politician. He was a natural. Very few of them. He was a natural politician. Got along with everybody.”

South Carolina Observances and Final Resting Place

After the Washington service concludes, Graham’s remains will travel to South Carolina for additional funeral proceedings the following day. The July 29 events will commence with a procession at the state house, where the South Carolina State Guard caisson detachment will carry his remains. A dramatic F-16 flyover will precede the transportation of his remains to the First Baptist Church of Columbia for the main service.

The two-day series of memorial events will ultimately conclude with a private burial ceremony located in Pickens County. Graham never married throughout his life and did not have any children of his own. He played a significant role in raising his sister, Darline Graham, following the death of their parents and later formally adopted her.

Darline Graham, whose appointed term extends through January 2027, announced on Monday that she intends to seek election to a full Senate term during this November’s elections. President Trump had previously encouraged her to pursue her late brother’s congressional seat, committing his “complete and total endorsement” should she decide to enter the race.
