Four settlers arrested in attack on journalists, including CNN, in West Bank
Four Settlers Arrested in Attack on Journalists in West Bank
Confrontation Near Sinjil Village
Four settlers arrested in attack on journalists – Israeli authorities confirmed Saturday that four settlers arrested in attack on journalists have been taken into custody following a violent encounter with media personnel in the occupied West Bank. The incident occurred near the Palestinian village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, where international reporters had gathered to mark the one-year anniversary of Saif Musallet’s death. The Palestinian-American citizen was beaten to death by Jewish settlers in July 2025, and the media presence honored his memory.
Reports from Israeli Police indicate the confrontation began shortly after journalists arrived at the site where Musallet was killed. A group of Israeli settlers descended upon the area, creating tension. As the CNN team and accompanying reporters attempted to leave, four settlers positioned their vehicle across the roadway, blocking the journalists’ exit. The settlers carried wooden and metal rods along with stones, which they brandished during the standoff.
One particularly aggressive settler pulled out a knife and attempted to puncture the tires of CNN’s vehicle, while others began jumping on the car positioned behind CNN’s, which was carrying another group of reporters. The impact of their weight caused the windshield of that vehicle to shatter. Meanwhile, a separate contingent of settlers moved to block an alternative exit route, then pursued the journalists as they made their way toward the town of Sinjil.
Police Response and Investigation
Israeli police officers and soldiers eventually arrived at the scene to restore order. Authorities reported that they apprehended four suspects before locating the settlers’ vehicle in the vicinity. During their investigation, police seized several items from inside the vehicle, including clubs and a knife, which were likely used during the confrontation. The arrested individuals are now facing charges related to the assault on media personnel.
“The Israel Police and the (Israel Defense Forces) view any manifestation of violence or causing damage to property very seriously, especially when it concerns media personnel performing their work,” police stated in an official announcement regarding the arrests.
Broader Context and Political Fallout
The arrest of the settlers comes against a backdrop of heightened tensions and scrutiny over settler violence in the region. Following Musallet’s death in July 2025, United States Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee publicly condemned the incident, describing it as both a “criminal and terrorist act.” Huckabee urged Israeli authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the beating. However, Musallet’s father later informed CNN that despite these promises, no arrests had been made in connection with his son’s death.
This latest incident involving journalists occurred just days after another high-profile confrontation. US Representative Ro Khanna was detained by settlers near the village of Turmus Ayya in the West Bank. The village is home to thousands of Palestinian-Americans who have experienced repeated attacks from settlers in the surrounding area. Khanna traveled to the region to demonstrate solidarity with American citizens who have expressed to CNN that they feel overlooked by their government.
“I saw the arrogance in the eyes of those settlers, 21- and 22-year-olds with guns, laughing that they had detained us, the arrogance of those young IDF soldiers that my tax dollars are funding, having no respect for the fact that they were detaining Americans, no respect that there was an American congressperson in that bus, and laughing when our translator told them that there are Americans there and the American embassy is concerned,” Khanna recounted in remarks to Reuters.
Netanyahu’s Assessment and Settlement Expansion
In a recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that settler violence has escalated dramatically. He characterized the perpetrators as a group of approximately 150 “juvenile delinquents” who are acting outside the bounds of normal behavior. While Netanyahu noted that police and military forces “take actions” against these individuals, he criticized Israeli courts for being “very lenient” toward those convicted of settler violence.
Despite these public statements from the prime minister, the West Bank continues to experience a significant surge in settler aggression. In many instances, Israeli soldiers have been observed standing by without intervening as settlers attack Palestinian communities and journalists alike. The four settlers arrested in attack on journalists represent just one chapter in an ongoing pattern of violence that has drawn international attention and calls for accountability from both regional and global leaders.
