One Dead, 27 Injured in Bus Crash on La Gomera, Canary Islands

Local emergency services confirmed that a bus transporting British tourists plunged into a ravine on La Gomera, resulting in one fatality and 27 injuries. The incident occurred while the group was en route to the San Sebastián de La Gomera dock, where they planned to board a ferry to Tenerife, as reported by Spanish outlet El Mundo.

The vehicle, carrying 28 individuals, included 27 British visitors and a single driver. Emergency responders shared that three of the injured were in critical condition, with most transported to Hospital Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe on the island’s eastern side. Two seriously hurt passengers were airlifted to hospitals in neighboring Tenerife via medical helicopter.

“The bus passengers were staying at a resort on the island,” said Héctor Cabrera, head of emergency operations in La Gomera, during a broadcast on public broadcaster TVE.

Emergency crews deployed a helicopter and five ambulances to the scene, with the crash happening on the GM-2 road. According to El Mundo, the bus fell from a height of approximately 10 meters. The road, known for its steep inclines and sharp turns, appears to have been near a hairpin bend when the accident occurred.

President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, extended his condolences to the victims and their families. La Gomera, the second smallest of Spain’s Canary Islands, is a 50-minute ferry ride from Tenerife, the largest island in the archipelago. The region is renowned for its volcanic terrain and hiking trails, attracting around 70,000 tourists annually, as noted by the Canary Islands Tourism Observatory.
