Wireless Festival cancelled after Kanye West blocked from coming to UK

Wireless Festival Cancellation Linked to Kanye West’s Visa Rejection

The summer edition of the Wireless Festival has been called off following the denial of travel permission for its headline act, Kanye West, now known as Ye. The UK government’s decision to block Ye’s entry came after public backlash against his planned performance at the London event. West’s recent remarks, which included antisemitic and pro-Nazi statements, had sparked controversy over his suitability as a festival attraction.

Wireless Festival organizers stated in a press release that the Home Office had revoked Ye’s ETA, preventing him from entering the country. “This action has led to the cancellation of the festival, with refunds being processed for all ticket holders,” they announced. The statement also noted that stakeholders were consulted before confirming Ye’s appearance, with no prior objections raised. The organizers emphasized their commitment to addressing antisemitism, acknowledging that Ye’s comments had real consequences and that he expressed a willingness to engage with the Jewish community.

“Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent,” said the festival team. “We recognize the personal and social impact of these issues, and Ye has acknowledged that words alone are insufficient. He still hopes to begin a dialogue with UK Jewish representatives.”

Presale tickets were released on Tuesday, reportedly selling out swiftly, while general admission sales were set for Wednesday. The Home Office revealed that Ye had applied for an ETA on Monday, citing his presence as a potential threat to public good. This applies to visitors without a UK visa or existing immigration status, requiring an ETA for short stays up to six months.

In response to the cancellation, Campaign Against Antisemitism criticized the lack of thorough consultation, suggesting the festival had only engaged with stakeholders who stood to benefit. “How did it come to this? It seems the only people consulted were those with a financial interest,” a spokesperson said, highlighting the irony of the festival’s current stance after Ye’s recent Nazi declarations.

“It’s nice that Wireless now says antisemitism is abhorrent,” the group added. “But just hours ago, the promoter was urging forgiveness for Ye’s recent full-blown Nazi comments.”

Melvin Benn, Festival Republic’s managing director, had previously mentioned that Jewish groups declined to meet with organizers after the event was announced. He stated that the outreach occurred over the past few days. However, the Board of Deputies refuted this, explaining that they had accepted Benn’s proposal to discuss concerns. “We have not refused any meeting requests,” a spokesperson clarified. “Our position remains that Ye’s invitation should be rescinded, regardless of any conversations.”

“Neither the Board of Deputies nor the Jewish Leadership Council has rejected any meeting invitations,” the spokesperson said. “We responded positively to Benn’s proposal on April 6, but insisted that West’s performance should be canceled.”

Benn defended Ye’s behavior, attributing it to mental health challenges. “Psychotic and bipolar episodes can persist for years,” he argued. “People are forgetting that Ye’s actions might be influenced by his current state of mind.” Despite this, the festival’s cancellation has left the issue unresolved, with the Home Office’s final decision casting doubt on Ye’s future UK appearances.
