Trump endorses ex-UK political aide Steve Hilton for California governor
Trump Backs Steve Hilton for California Governor
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron’s top strategist, Steve Hilton, has received a surprising endorsement from US President Donald Trump for the position of California governor. This move injects fresh momentum into a state race where Democrats typically hold overwhelming control, with the June 2 primary drawing 10 candidates. The top two vote-getters, irrespective of political affiliation, will proceed to the general election, creating an unusual dynamic in the fiercely contested contest.
“Democrats have struggled significantly in managing the state,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post, suggesting Republican Steve Hilton “would be a great governor.”
Hilton, who relocated to California several years ago, has positioned himself as a reform candidate advocating for reduced taxes, streamlined budgets, and lower living costs. His political journey includes a stint as a key advisor to Cameron from 2010 to 2012, followed by a shift toward more conservative policies and a role on Fox News. Despite his time in the UK, Hilton has since aligned himself with US political issues, particularly those affecting families and economic growth.
The Berkeley-based Institute of Governmental Studies’ March poll upended expectations, showing Hilton and rival Republican Chad Bianco outperforming Democratic contenders. This data prompted concern within the Democratic Party, with officials urging some candidates to withdraw to consolidate support. Among the Democrats, Congressman Eric Swalwell, former congresswoman Katie Porter, and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer emerged as leading figures, though their standing remains uncertain.
Trump’s endorsement, while boosting Hilton’s visibility, could complicate his path to victory. If the November election pits him against a Democratic opponent, the president’s backing might not be enough to overcome the state’s liberal leanings. However, the endorsement highlights a rare opportunity for Republicans to challenge Democratic dominance in California, where the party has held power for decades.
Hilton, currently a visiting scholar at Stanford University, has also applied for US citizenship, signaling his commitment to the American political landscape. His candidacy adds an unexpected layer to a race already marked by volatility and a fragmented Democratic field, potentially reshaping the outcome of the state’s next gubernatorial election.
