Tories urge Waitrose to reinstate worker sacked ‘after tackling shoplifter’
Tories Push for Waitrose to Rehire Employee After Confrontation with Shoplifter
Worker Dismissed Following Brief Struggle Over Easter Egg Theft
Following a dispute involving a shoplifter, the Conservative Party has sent a letter to Waitrose demanding the reinstatement of a long-serving employee, Walker Smith. The 54-year-old claimed he was terminated from his role after 17 years of service, just two days after a minor altercation that led to a short scuffle before the suspect escaped. Smith’s account, shared with the Guardian, highlighted his frustration over repeated thefts at the store in Clapham Junction, south London.
“Chris Philp stated in the letter that the incident demonstrates a broader issue of offenders operating with little fear of punishment. He argued that Smith’s dismissal was unjust and suggested reinstating him, along with a bonus for his courage and proactive action.”
Waitrose countered by stating that the details of the case “do not reflect the entire situation.” A spokesperson noted that while they cannot disclose specifics of individual cases, they emphasized adherence to a standard appeals process. The store also mentioned that Smith’s actions were “escalated” after he grabbed a bag used to carry stolen £13 Easter eggs, leading to a brief struggle. Smith later apologized to the manager but maintained that he felt powerless against the ongoing thefts.
“Smith recounted that thefts occurred daily for the past five years, ranging from small items to entire bottles of wine. He felt compelled to act, stating, ‘We’re not allowed to do anything.’ During the incident, he admitted to throwing a chocolate egg out of frustration, though he stressed his regret for the actions taken.”
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage echoed the criticism, tweeting that the situation shows a national trend of favoring criminals over those who enforce the law. Waitrose, which is part of the John Lewis Partnership, reiterated its commitment to safety, explaining that policies are in place to prevent risks. They noted that some staff have been hospitalized in similar encounters, though all have recovered. The company emphasized that “nothing we sell is worth risking lives for,” according to their statement.
“Waitrose stressed, ‘The safety and security of our partners and customers are our top priorities. We have always supported staff who step in to stop thefts, even if it means the incident is escalated. Our policies are clear and must be strictly followed to ensure everyone’s well-being.'”
The dispute has sparked debate over workplace safety protocols and the balance between protecting employees and deterring theft. Waitrose has also called for legislative changes, advocating for retail crime to be recognized as a standalone offense to better safeguard shop workers.
