Berlin Central Station’s escalator chaos frustrates travellers and politicians

Berlin Central Station, a major European hub, faces operational challenges despite its size and modern design. A staggering 35 of its 52 escalators are currently inoperable, disrupting daily commutes for over 300,000 passengers who rely on the station for transfers and their belongings.

Local officials are now stepping in to address the issue. The city’s Governing Mayor, Kai Wegner, has expressed frustration with the situation, urging Deutsche Bahn to resolve the escalator malfunctions swiftly. “The Governing Mayor expects Deutsche Bahn to rectify the problems with the escalators in Berlin as quickly as possible,” the Tagesspiegel newspaper reported, citing German press agency dpa.

Deutsche Bahn has responded by initiating repair efforts. Technicians from both Deutsche Bahn and KONE, a Finnish elevator manufacturer, have begun working on the faulty escalators this week. The company has also ordered spare parts from global suppliers. However, the duration of the disruption remains uncertain.

“The failure of the escalators at Berlin Central Station is due to a technical fault in the escalators. The fault lies with the manufacturer,” explains Detlef Neuß from the passenger association Pro Bahn. He adds that the sudden stoppages pose safety risks, potentially leading to passenger falls. “Where the escalators are out of order, barrier-free access to the platforms should be guaranteed by functioning lifts,” he emphasizes.

Political figures are also raising concerns. Steffen Krach, a prominent candidate for the Social Democratic Party, questioned the accountability of the situation. “I’m almost embarrassed to ask this, but can the governing mayor of the German capital please call Deutsche Bahn and invite them to speak plainly, or is the responsibility for the big picture out of order as well as escalators at the main station?” he asked in an interview with Tagesspiegel.

With the repairs ongoing, it remains to be seen how long the station will stay in disarray. The outcome could determine whether the chaos is a temporary glitch or a deeper systemic issue affecting public transport infrastructure in the city.
