Jim Carrey’s face is up for debate. No, seriously
Last week, Jim Carrey made an appearance at the César Awards in France, but the event quickly became a focal point for discussion. His representative, Marleah Leslie, confirmed to CNN that the individual present was the actor himself, stating, “Jim Carrey attended the César Awards, where he accepted his Honorary César Award.”
Yet, the moment was met with widespread skepticism. Over the weekend, images and videos of Carrey surfaced online, showcasing a face that appeared notably fuller and more youthful. Commenters questioned his identity, with some claiming he looked “unrecognizable” and others suggesting he might be a lookalike dressed in his likeness.
Adding to the confusion, drag artist Alexis Stone shared a post on social media that seemed to support the theory. “Alexis Stone as Jim Carrey in Paris,” he captioned a series of photos, including a mask, fake teeth, and a wig resembling the actor’s signature dark hair. CNN has since sought comments from Stone’s representatives to clarify the situation.
Carrey’s return to the public eye was unexpected, especially given his reclusive tendencies in recent years. In 2022, he told “Access Hollywood” that he was “fairly serious” about retiring from acting. However, he made a surprise appearance in 2025 at the UK premiere of “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” where he reprised his role as the villain Dr. Robotnik.
Further fueling the debate was the fact that Carrey delivered his acceptance speech in French, a language he does not speak natively. Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the César Awards, addressed the speculation, explaining, “The Truman Show” star had been preparing his speech for months, consulting him on precise word pronunciations.
Caulier also noted that Carrey arrived with his partner, daughter, grandson, and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist was present, and his collaborator Michel Gondry, who has worked with him on multiple projects, was among the attendees. “They were delighted to see each other again,” Caulier added.
While some theorized that Carrey had undergone cosmetic procedures like fillers or a nip/tuck, the mystery may also stem from the public’s deep connection to celebrities. Female stars often face scrutiny for their appearances even when they’re not in the spotlight, and this is no different for Carrey. His altered look challenged fans’ expectations, especially after years of minimal public exposure.
Carrey’s versatility has always been a hallmark of his career, from his role in the 1990s sketch show “In Living Color” to the iconic 1994 film “The Mask.” His ability to transform physically is well-documented, making the debate all the more entertaining. As for his wild remarks during a New York Fashion Week interview in 2024, where he proclaimed “There is no me. There is just things happening,” he later described it as an “existential experiment.”
With more men opting for cosmetic surgery each year, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in January 2025, it’s clear that appearance is a topic of fascination. From Joe Jonas, who used Xeomin to reduce wrinkles and became its brand ambassador, to Simon Cowell, who admitted to using fillers until he felt “a stage where I might have gone a bit too far,” male celebrities are not immune to the pressure of looking their best.
So, perhaps the question isn’t whether Carrey was real, but whether the public is ready to accept that stars can evolve, even if it means a few changes to their looks. Maybe it’s time to stop doubting and appreciate the moment he earned an honorary César.
